Gender affirming healthcare must be founded on respect and understanding. It’s not just about hormones, puberty blockers and surgery. Thank you Aud Mason-Hyde for your incredibly articulate and challenging keynote speech. #DFTB23

This! Be REALLY careful with investigations or suggesting them. If we are confident of a diagnosis (there is nothing else that looks like functional tics for example) then it’s really important not to do XYZ “just to be sure.”

Approach to FND in the ED: - thorough history - detailed examination - investigations where appropriate - discussion around FND - be curious about their preconceptions/belief - be careful and compassionate with language - ensure adequate follow-up Penny Larcombe at #DFTB23

@DrNickTwit 100% - speaker wasn’t suggesting to use this with parents - in fact advocated using a medical approach utilising terminology regarding the impact of stress on the brain and the changes resulting to this (Sadly didn’t copy that slide but @kiddr_7 may have it!) #DFTB23

Functional Neurological Disorder is essentially a disorder of stress That stress may not be obvious to the child or family. The child may not be able to express the stress or change the situation that is causing it. - Penny Larcombe #DFTB23

FND is not a diagnosis of exclusion. Include FND in your differential diagnoses in your discussion with the patient/family from the start. Penny Larcombe at #DFTB23
