Today marks my last day as a nephrologist and #IMG in the United States of America. I've learned the hard way that life is too short and that my happiness lies within my family's happiness. So, I'm returning permanently to my home country, Egypt. (🧵 1)

“Would anyone notice if something happened to me?” A resident asked me that question five years ago. I never forgot it. Today, JAMA published my second essay, Would Anyone Notice?, inspired by that moment. Looking back, I realize it’s almost a prequel to Time Is Finite. One essay is about realizing our own time is finite. The other is about realizing we never know how much time someone else has. Medicine never stops moving. Maybe that’s why we have to be intentional about making time for ourselves and for one another. Who in your life needs someone to notice them today? @JAMA_current @p_johari_ @NorthwellHealth

🇪🇬 Dear #Egypt, my home, the cradle of civilization. ❤️‍🩹 You've endured more than a decade of hardship, forcing many of your children to leave in search of a better future, with only a handful returning home. Yet your spirit never broke. 📜 You gave the world history. You gave rise to great 🩺physicians, 🔬 scientists, 📚 novelists, 🏅 athletes, and countless 🔝 pioneers, all with remarkably limited resources. ⚽ A football match doesn't define you. 🦾Character does. 🌍 The world sees you. You may have lost the game, but you earned the world's respect. 🇪🇬 Proud to be #Egyptian. ❤️

Egypt came into this tournament never having won a World Cup match. They got their first-ever win in the group stage, first-ever knockout win in the RO32 and took the defending champion Argentina to the brink in the RO16. An all-time run for the Pharaohs 🇪🇬

Thank you @MayoClinic for highlighting our work on the novel mechanism in regulating renal water regulation published by the prestigious @jclinicalinvest ! This is a particularly meaningful milestone for me and our entire team. What began as a scientific question evolved into an eight year journey of discovery, persistence, setbacks, and continued determination. I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished together and grateful to the many trainees, collaborators, mentors, and colleagues who contributed along the way. Advancing science is truly a team effort, and it is rewarding to see years of hard work culminate in findings that may ultimately improve our understanding of kidney physiology and disease. Onward to the next chapter. newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/res…

Mayo Clinic researchers have identified a previously unrecognized way the kidneys regulate water balance — an advance that could lead to improved treatments for polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and other disorders. The study, led by Fouad Chebib, M.D., a nephrologist at Mayo Clinic, is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. Learn more: mayocl.in/4orJ3hG
