⚔️ The last great Highland charge did not happen in Scotland. It happened on a misty bridge in North Carolina, thirty years after Culloden. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 After the Jacobite defeat of 1746, thousands of Highlanders emigrated to the Carolinas, carrying their language, their tartan and their broadswords across the Atlantic. When the American Revolution broke out, many of these Scots stayed loyal to the very crown that had once crushed them. In February 1776, a force of Loyalist Highlanders marched to Moore's Creek Bridge, near Wilmington, and prepared to do what their fathers had done at Prestonpans and Culloden: charge, with cold steel and a war cry. They stormed the bridge at dawn with broadswords drawn and the pipes screaming. But the patriots had stripped the planks and greased the log rails, and waited with muskets and cannon. The charge was cut to pieces in minutes. It was, in a very real sense, the last Highland charge, fought and lost on American soil by men who never stopped being Scots. 💙 Did you know the Highlanders carried their charge all the way to America?
