The "New Atheism" that emerged in the 1980s is most assuredly evangelical in every sense of the word. That, in itself, is the absurdity. True philosophical atheism will avoid a theoretical basis that interferes with recognizing/observing reality. Evangelical atheism is founded in a faith that alternative reality systems are, at best, debilitating. More nominally it sees and harangues them as flagrantly evil. But that is as far as the idea goes. It lives and thrives on its oppositional/revolutionary fervor. It qualifies as a religion in this regard because its leaders enrich themselves by garnering attention and gathering followers and acolytes.
