@georgediano If united opposition truly wants to dethrone Ruto through the ballot, then they should pick Sifuna and Babu as presidential candidate and running mate. Picking Kalonzo and dupitising him with Matiangi shall hand Ruto an early win.

The United Opposition settled on Kalonzo Musyoka as the flag bearer of the United Opposition 3 months ago. The team is yet to pick a running mate due to complex politics including finances and voting blocs. But chances of persuading Edwin Sifuna are high. The team will mostly depend on finances from Uhuru Kenyatta, thus he has a huge say on the lineup. Uhuru has no issues with Kalonzo Musyoka. On the running mate, he has his Jubilee Party currently led by Dr. Fred Matiang'i. It is not clear who between Sifuna and Matiang'i he will pick. The team will assess voting blocs of Gusii and Western before making the decision. However, Mt. Kenya also wants a stake in the opposition arrangement to avoid having Ruto’s UDA running riot in the region, especially now that it is confirmed Prof. Kithure Kindiki will be retained as Ruto’s running mate in 2027. Pundits also say that Kalonzo Musyoka enjoys backing from Western allies, particularly the USA.

Ruto is reportedly under pressure after receiving an intelligence report claiming that key opposition leaders Kalonzo Musyoka and Rigathi Gachagua secretly met with Edwin Sifuna and James Orengo at a private hotel in Nairobi in late April to explore the possibility of forming a united front for the 2027 General Election. Reports indicate that Ruto became uneasy after learning that Gachagua was pushing for a Kalonzo Sifuna presidential ticket for 2027 after considering the current political dynamics, especially following the rise of the Linda Mwananchi movement. It is also alleged that Gachagua and Kalonzo postponed the planned opposition retreat in Mombasa that had been scheduled for late April to name the coalition’s presidential candidate and running mate. This decision reportedly came after they concluded that sidelining the Linda Mwananchi movement could weaken their chances against William Ruto. According to the claims, the leaders felt that an earlier proposal involving a Kalonzo Matiang’i ticket would not secure enough support, particularly from Gen Z voters who are increasingly aligning themselves with the Linda Mwananchi movement. After reviewing the political landscape and considering both the Raila and Gen Z influence ahead of 2027, they allegedly agreed that a Kalonzo Sifuna ticket would give them a stronger advantage since Ruto may struggle to benefit from Raila’s influence while Kalonzo and Sifuna have remained loyal allies of Raila Odinga for over two decades. The strategy is also said to rely on support from Gen Z voters, the Mulembe voting bloc, the My Kenya movement, and the Kamba community. Now, insiders claim that Ruto is deeply worried and scrambling for a counter strategy to stop what some are calling a powerful political alliance.
