beehiiv or substack?
thinking of starting a newsletter and don’t want to mess-up with the platform.
for people who’ve actually used either:
what worked well?
what didn't?
which one would you pick if you were starting from zero today?

We sold out last year for the first time running the event.
This year we were able to add 50 more tickets and sold out weeks earlier.
The momentum feels so good!

Alright everyone, it's time to start gathering more hot takes, first-hand experience and thoughtful advice.
Which one: @Substack vs. @beehiiv vs. @Ghost?
Alongside my other freelance work, I've been researching/planning something new for quite a while & would love help deciding where to build it. (I know there are plenty of upsides and downsides with each.)
Happy to share more context for those interested!

Inbox placement for mass sends is a real challenge across the industry. It's actually why we have a dedicated deliverability team working on this full time, plus an in-platform AI agent that helps troubleshoot inbox issues in real time. Not a perfect fix for Gmail's filters, but we invest more in this than most 💙
English

@kit has that problem too with Gmail. As you increase notification with post or note it reduce in priority and ends up in your other inbox and not the main inbox.
It’s a Gmail concern and Substack can only do so much to tell the Gmail algo it’s not spam.
But because they have to notify us mass send and with unsubscribe at bottom it imminently flags non main inbox and reduce prioritisation

Gmail changed how tracking pixels work, so open rates are reading lower across every email platform
Your audience hasn’t gone anywhere—this change has had no impact on actual subscriber behavior. Click-through rates, delivery, and engagement have all remained stable. These, along with new subscriber counts, unique views, and paid conversion rates, are the clearest signals of genuine, high-quality engagement and whether people are truly connecting with what you're making.
Email may continue getting less reliable. We can’t control how email providers operate, but this is exactly why we are investing in the Substack app, which delivers posts and Notes directly to your audience. On Substack, you have a direct line to subscribers, on a platform whose business model only works when yours does.

@jasondoesstuff @nathanbarry This is such a good point, Jason – appreciate you sharing this!

Maybe it's just me, but charts without takeaways are pretty unhelpful. 🙈
Love that @kit + @nathanbarry are adding new features to track email "engagement."
But... adding direct takeaways would be SUPER helpful 😎.

Your email list isn't the problem. Your platform is. 👀
Signs it's time to move on:
→ List growing, results flatlined
→ "Personalization" = manually sorting segments
→ Automations that quit before you do
→ No post-purchase flow (still)
→ You've thought about switching. More than once.
Kit is for creators who've outgrown their starter tool. 25% off through April 30. Migration support included. bit.ly/4vCl7vk

→ Reward your VIPs with a new product offer
→ Collect testimonials 60 days post-sale
Set it up once. Let it run.

What if your mailbox was a source of inspiration? ☀️
Dhar Mann thinks it should be — so he built Inspiration Weekly, a newsletter delivering kindness, hope, and positive energy straight to your inbox every Monday morning at 9am ET.
Because there's enough negativity out there. Your inbox doesn't have to add to it.

hey Joakim 👋 between those two, Kit is the one built for your exact shape — 3K to 10K fits on the free plan, and when you start pushing products you get built-in commerce, visual automations, and the Creator Network (other Kit creators can recommend your newsletter to their subs). happy to walk through the migration if helpful or answer any specific questions!

I used Mailchimp for years, and my emails always struggled to get through, and my tools were limited. Now they are even raising their prices.
I switched to Kit a few years ago and love it for my email campaigns and really love the flexibility just with the free plan. With a paid plan, you can even have paid memberships to your list (think substack).
They are doing a Mailchimp switcher campaign through April 30th if anyone is interested. New Kit customers get 25% off annual plans through April 30, plus dedicated migration support from our team.
