@sgadarian Yes! I was really grateful to meet a bunch of experienced chairs (mostly scientists, as it happened) who were very useful mentors my first year.

@sgadarian Where is it being held? They used to do that years ago -- I was super grateful that they had one of those sessions the summer before I started my term as chair. It was at Colgate, which was fun.

You know you live in a small town when the owner of the local diner posts on Facebook telling the folks who have chickens that he'll pay $3 a dozen for eggs -- which leads to a long thread about people's chickens not laying because it's so hot. And foxes, of course.

Small town life: someone is trying to give away an apparently extremely large amount of old composted horse manure and all the comments are like "yes absolutely I'll be there immediately"

Last night our eldest married her BF. In their lovely apartment here in Brooklyn, with just a couple of their friends and our fam, everyone spiffed up, music beamed from my iPhone to a speaker, dinner on laps of caviar & good champagne. Such warmth on a cold night in a dark time.

I’ll never get over the fact that in 1960s & 70s Nebraska my conservative Republican parents’ go-to example of “black hats,” their derisive term for crazy far-right-wingers, were our neighbors across the street, the Lamps, parents of young Ginni, the future Mrs. Clarence Thomas.
