A reminder about the Caruso-Giddey trade: even if you believed Giddey could be a multi-time All-Star, and even if Giddey becomes one, the Bulls still got fleeced. It was malpractice not to get a pick back based on the value of the trade assets at the time. Nothing will change it.
@klahoops Not really Giddey is literally the team leader in Pts, Ast, & Rebs. Caruso had the same exact team damn near and is no where near more impactful,Yall really just get on here and say anything.. Wemby put 40 on his head and yall talking about impactful. They literally left him open
@klahoops I see everyone is just prisoners of the moment. That man avg 7 points in Chicago 😂 you’re not getting a first round pick for that… it was a good trade w giddy
@klahoops So Caurso is going into the Hall of Fame? You're making this sound it like permanently changed the franchise for the worst with no hope of coming back from it.
@klahoops 💯 No need for disrespect due to a difference of opinion. Giddey was the runaway leader for ROY over Barnes before he got hurt. Yes. He had a bad playoffs playing a role he didn’t fit. That doesn’t mean he was worth less than picks from a bad draft. Duren just had a bad run too.
@ThatGuyMurphTV Giddey had played in the league for 4 years and had (very bad) playoff experience, so I’m not sure calling him a prospect is accurate. Draft picks are still relative unknowns in comparison, I’d rather take a shot there. But I appreciate the respectful discussion regardless.
@klahoops This isn’t a retroactive value prop. Even before the trade, Giddey was a better prospect than what we could have gotten with those picks. Trading for Giddey instead of those picks is more akin to trading Giannis for Randle instead of the 28th pick.
@HammerCurlss I’m also less inclined to give the benefit of the doubt to AK on the trade because his track record otherwise was pretty abysmal, waiting too long and targeting players he liked over implementing good process. That this trade looks better now feels more like blind luck.
@klahoops Kings was a trade deadline offer or during the season at least. OKC was after the season ended in June. It was kings lotto that ended up 13th vs giddey. I do agree with swinging at the lotto. Ware could’ve been the pick and solved center but it was AK so no surprise he messed up
@ThatGuyMurphTV You can get a great result from bad process, or you can get a bad result from great process, but one doesn’t change the other for me. You have to trust that implementing the right process will produce great results over the long haul. Otherwise it’s blind squirrel finds nut.
@ThatGuyMurphTV Well that’s the crux of my position. The fact that Giddey has (so far) ended up a better player does not change that the process of the trade was bad, just like trading Giannis for the 28th pick is bad even if pick 28 ends up a multi-time MVP. It’s always process > results for me
@HammerCurlss My recollection was the Kings had offered it at the same time as the OKC deal but I’ll have to go back and check. And from a process standpoint I’d rather get a swing in the lottery if I’m rebuilding versus a 4-year player, even if Giddey ends up being better, if that makes sense
@klahoops And again they were prob non lotto picks bc Caruso was expiring. The only confirmed lotto pick was the kings 13th pick that was used on Devin Carter and that was when Caruso had two years on his deal. If youre saying the bulls should’ve agreed and drafted kelel ware then I agree
@ThatGuyMurphTV Sure. Both Golden State and Memphis offered the Bulls multiple first round picks and players. I also would have taken the Kings’ lottery first that year. But my point is that the process was/is bad regardless of the outcome turning out better than expected. Can’t operate this way
@klahoops None of the offers that came out would have yielded a player better than Giddey. I’m not being difficult here. Is there a deal that actually comes to mind that would have been more valuable than Giddey?
@klahoops@Pittsburgh_Jerm Impact on winning doesn’t matter until you’re ready to win. Caruso was of no use to a play-in team. Take the younger player & see if he develops.
@klahoops That’s what an expiring contract is but at the end of the day you’re right that the Bulls sold low by waiting too long to trade Caruso. But I push back that you’d get a player of Giddey’s quality + a good first. If you’re getting both a player and pick, one will be be low quality
@ThatGuyMurphTV This is not one of those instances. Several teams offered better packages for Caruso at both the February 2024 deadline and before the Bulls traded him in June 2024. The Bulls turned those down because they wanted Giddey specifically. The GMs were shocked just like everyone else.
@klahoops Yes. Everyone was shocked. Because media opinion reflects GM opinions so consistently? We see the 2 deviate so consistently that it all amounts to noise outside of maybe Shams. His value, especially to OKC, was what he got traded for.
@ThatGuyMurphTV They can say what they want, their actions said the relationship was over. The Bulls had all the leverage, with multiple teams offering valuable assets for Caruso and OKC trying to go for a championship. Like honestly Murph, all of this stuff is factual, public record.
@klahoops Both Giddey and Presti said the opposite. The issue with Giddey for them was fit. And what leverage? The Thunder weren’t really on the clock with Giddey, but we needed to make a decision with Caruso.
@HammerCurlss I agree that it’s usually not the case, but it certainly has happened and this trade happened in June 2024, with a full year still on his contract. And I know for a fact that that other teams were offering the Bulls that and more. But the Bulls wanted Giddey specifically.
@klahoops Very rarely do you get a player + 1st for an expiring contract if ever. Trae Young was traded for freaking McCollum and kispert with no draft picks because he’s on an expiring contract. You’re simply asking for something that has no precedent.
He’s a defender on a contender. And the reason I bring up points is because literally the only time people bring this trade up is when Caruso drops 20 points for 3rd time in his nba career lol he’s a role player. Josh Giddey has more career triple doubles then Caruso has 15 point games lol
@HammerCurlss That’s not really true. Both teams made the trade with the intent to re-sign those players, and it was important for OKC to get Caruso’s bird rights in a trade because they couldn’t sign him outright in free agency given the competition for his services.
@HelemNejse0 OKC benched him because of his poor performances (especially in the playoffs) and Giddey responded by asking to be traded. There were absolutely major doubts at the time about what type of player he was and would end up being. It was not a fair trade in hindsight or otherwise.
@klahoops He averaged 16/8/6 in year 2 as a 20 year old, I don’t think there were major doubts whether he would develop or not. OKC were trading their ‘more likely than not’ future all star for the Bulls’ star role player. A fair trade in hindsight.
