Information that should have remained confidential allegedly ended up in the hands of William Ruto’s circle. Hassan Omar denied the allegations and blamed non‑governmental organisations, saying they had misled the world about threats to ICC witnesses in Kenya. William Ruto, for his part, accused Hassan Omar of bribing witnesses to testify against him at the ICC. The two men traded accusations while, at the same time, witnesses began to disappear. When the first witness was abducted and tortured in Eldoret, Hassan Omar dismissed the report as fake news. At least 13 witnesses were reportedly abducted and killed, and 16 disappeared or recanted their evidence - developments that contributed to the vacatur (not an acquittal) of charges against William Ruto at the ICC. Today, William Ruto and Hassan Omar are both in government and are accused by critics of promoting divisive tribal narratives targeting one region of Kenya.
