My colleagues Riccardo Bavaj, @BernhardStruck and I created a short book "A Guide to Spatial History: Areas, Aspects, and Avenues of Research" that is open access (CC-BY) as a website, available as PDF, epub, and a near-at-cost paperback. spatialhistory.net/guide/ 1/6

After leaving this site, I’ve been over at Mastodon since early 2022, but I also post on the other network that is growing rapidly. Great to see more and more old friends there. bsky.app/profile/kml.mu…

This is my last tweet. It was a good run here! I’m quite happy now with the community on the other decentralized social network, posting and following lots of great people.

Looks like another wave of people joining us on a certain Mammutidae inspired social network that apparently should not be named on this network (it’s ok, we call Twitter “the bird site” over there). Very nice community of historians there now: #gid=844879137" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d…

@AileenFyfe @catmacOA One thing to perhaps try is set up account at one or two other instances. Import your follows there (don’t migrate followers and freeze just export and import your follows) or just a few of them, and compare. That way you can see if your experience is instance specific?

If you're hearing a lot about the fediverse these days, you should know: Mastodon is not the whole fediverse and the fediverse is not simply a Twitter replacement. The fediverse is an entire ecosystem, built on something called ActivityPub. Learn more: eff.org/deeplinks/2022…

Great post on one of the biggest differences between Twitter and Mastodon: Search. It is one of the ways in which the culture of the communities that built up Mastodon have taken it in a different direction: midrange.tedium.co/issues/how-mas…

@kerim Another 300k or so since new accounts since Wednesday! That is great, I sympathize for all the admins who are struggling to manage the traffic!

Dipping a toe in Mastodon in case this ship capsizes. When I get the hang of it, I’m @Isabelh@newsie.social. Cue Vera Lynn … no doubt I shall see many of you over there…

@kerim Yes exactly: we have seen at least 1m new joins in past few weeks (there were already several million mostly dormant accounts earlier this year), and *active* users have more than doubled to over a million. Both are great signs!

@jwassers @isabelhilton The way around that with follow lists is to visit the profile of someone on web *at* their instance to see their full follow list. Then you are viewing the source at its publication house.

@jwassers @isabelhilton When you see people talking about the challenges of mastodon as a platform it is because it takes a wee bit of time to fully grok the way the federation works: your instance is a place with lots of subscriptions to people in world and mail rooms that can get clogged when busy

@jwassers @isabelhilton I think there is one I saw mentioned. One complication on looking at follows: when you visit my profile you are seeing what *your instance* knows about me cached locally. If you are the first person on your instance to follow me, that will = nothing.
