@JacoMajor I visited Fells Point for a week once. I heard automatic gunfire on two separate nights, saw a man on a Barbie bike snatch someone’s phone out their hand, and saw evidence of a car break ins. Bars weren’t even good, and it’s not walkable with horrific parking.

@kellyb019283 @JacoMajor Based off your other comment this was what 20 years ago? Have you been back to the city within the last 2 or are you just going to keep clinging onto the past

@JacoMajor Anyone saying this has never walked the piss laden alleys 6 blocks north of the harbor, nor been mugged by a teen with a steak knife after an Orioles game. The opportunities for cultural enrichment abound.

I feel like a lot of people would be shocked to find out that a lot of the country is *not* at its peak life expectancy! Large swaths of the country peaked pre-2015 and we have multiple states that peaked pre-2010!

@hedeedit The biggest worry for dems on this graph is NC, if NC looked like Georgia at +12 D then dems would only have to worry about them + the blue wall for the next 30 years (294 EV in Todays map). Since NC isn't like Georgia tho dems would only hang onto 278 in the current map

@shanesmith336 @Dazzleox @ubisuntamerica @butleriano Even pre covid people would make that commute for a cheap house + dc salary, honestly if WV didn't have the rep it does during covid WAY more people would've moved there for the outdoors

@usukpp @StatisticUrban No lol. Like %1 of the pop lives in a southerny part. Baltimore, silver springs, annapolis all very northeast. History? More northeast. Demographically more northeast. No true southerner would see it as kin. Tbh less southern than PA

@capitalweather See this list has me curious about the 1935-1936 winter as I wonder why it was particularly brutal and if that same reason led to the summer of 1936's brutal heatwave

D.C.’s longest freezing streak since 1989 ends, but more bitter cold looms The D.C. area has just emerged from its longest uninterrupted stretch of freezing weather in more than 35 years. Temperatures did not rise above 32 degrees for a bone-numbing nine straight days — 233 consecutive hours — a feat unsurpassed since 1989. The prolonged cold, combined with a winter storm that dumped a dense mix of snow and ice, has produced one of the region’s most severe winter weather episodes in decades. The rock-hard conglomeration — dubbed “snowcrete” — continues to block roads and sidewalks in parts of the area, while some schools have remained closed for more than a week. The cold snap has also iced-over area waterways to an unusual extent. Although the streak of freezing days has finally ended, winter’s grip has not. Temperatures are expected to remain below normal for the rest of the week, and another punishing blast of cold is poised to arrive by the weekend. Readings are forecast to run about 20 degrees below normal, with dangerously low wind chill levels. Link to full story in reply

This is trending poorly. Kp index down to 7. We want it 9+ for aurora in the DC area. It was 10 just before sunset; unfortunate...

The cast vote record lets you see exactly how voters split their ticket here. Abortion divided Trump’s voters down the middle: there were counties with *more pro-abortion Trump voters* than anti-abortion ones. On average, only about half of Trump voters were also anti-abortion!
Max@maxtmcc

This year, Maryland enshrined the right to an abortion in the state constitution with over 76% of the vote. The amendment got wide bipartisan support, winning everywhere but the state’s most conservative communities. It carried every congressional district and all but one county.

@LupineChemist @NoobtheLoser @midwestern_ope Ehhhh it doesn't split the dc area as much as you think, it cuts off a bit of Charles county on the md side and I think goes directly through stafford so you lose Fredericksburg but thats about it. Also people seem to also miss 4 includes detroit, Columbus and Cleveland

@NoobtheLoser @midwestern_ope I think 8 wins on population. Yeah NY Boston and Philly, but it splits DC area and the SE has a lot of people in medium density. Florida has more people than NY, for example and Georgia more than Mass. 7 also has a ton of people.

We're now in a cold weather regime, which will be lasting a while! This means, when storm systems come through, we'll have to be on watch for wintry precip. We have two systems coming through in the next five days... on Sunday and Tuesday, and both have a small chance to produce a little snow or sleet, before a probable change to rain, especially in colder areas north and west of the Beltway. The Tuesday storm is the bigger of the two but the pattern isn't quite right for a snowstorm (see our post from Thursday night). There is a chance that some of our colder areas see a brief period of snow and/or sleet before a flip to a cold, miserable rain. More details at cwg.live
