@TonyRoddUK The rate of VAT needs to drop and the registration threshold for smaller businesses in general must be raised. £85k turnover is nothing and is completely out of date. Really sorry to read what you’re going through. It’s a truly horrible time for our industry.

Here's the thing. There's no magic wand to save hospitality. It needs to be many things. VAT needs to drop. Without service charge, your total bill is roughly: 20% VAT 30% food and drink cost 40% staff costs That leaves 10% for rent, energy, business rates, contracts and

@Sacha_Lord And an adjustment to the threshold - this is also extremely important and needs to be pushed as much as a reduction in rate.

A reduction in VAT is the one single mechanism that will save Hospitality businesses, jobs and supply chain. We are now on an election footing. Whoever you are voting for, ask if they will support a VAT reduction. Hospitality is the beating heart of your community.

@UKHofficial @UKHospKate VAT reform is imperative. Threshold for reg needs to double at least, and rate must half.

Hospitality guys, we have to now all come together on mass and as an industry push the Government for a VAT reduction in the Spring budget or many businesses will be lost. We have to shout louder and encourage those that claim to represent us to do the same.

The rise in minimum wage is fantastic news for millions and well overdue. The Govt aren’t giving you this though, businesses are. Many Hospitality businesses are breaking even/making a loss. A Spring VAT reduction is now needed more than ever, to offset this increase.

Gary is absolutely right. Our industry has seen record closures this year (6 F&B venues a day at the moment), and the Autumn statement hasn't offered us any additional support. Expect to see more closures. In the mean time, please support your local businesses where you can.

@AlexReilley1 A change to the VAT rate / threshold would have been the biggest help to combat current challenges for hospitality SMEs, and that’s before the rise in NLW was announced. Now we’ve got to find an extra ~10% extra profit to just stand still and cover wages. Nowhere near good enough

THE FARCE Business rates support is a continuation of existing support (& is vital to many). A beer duty freeze is just that - a ‘freeze’ & is worth absolute buttons. The cost of inflation-busting NLW is being picked up by business not the govt (along with the employers NI...

@Sacha_Lord VAT has got to be the next campaign. Finding an extra 10% in profit just to cover wage increases before other rises in utilities / rent / costs is just not going to be possible for so many small (especially hospitality) businesses. Feeling absolutely abandoned, again.

I'm pleased to see The Chancellor has listened and agreed to extend the current Business Rates Relief in todays statement. The extension will allow Hospitality operators a bit of breathing space. We must now work together, in calling for a VAT reduction in the Spring Budget.

Absolutely deflated. Small businesses have to find a near 10% extra PROFIT to account for the pay rises next year, but without anything meaningful to balance the books. All feels a bit hopeless.

@PeterBorgNeal Rate is far too high and the threshold for registration is far too low. Our input VAT is minuscule compared to the output VAT, as it is for many hospitality businesses. It’s a huge tax burden that we’ve got to deal with on top of energy, wages, stock and lower customer spending.
