One of the most intelligent things we do in the US (and in many places in the west) is that we build nitrogen fertilizer plants close to the source supply of natural gas. Want to know why we do that? We do that because 70-90% of the cost of nitrogen fertilizer comes from the price of natural gas. But nitrogen fertilizers are only one of the three inputs. The other two are phosphorus and potassium. The vulnerability of phosphorus production comes from sulfur. Sulfur makes sulfuric acid and sulfuric acid is used to convert phosphorus rock into a plant available form of phosphoric acid. Now here’s the important point; “sour crudes” like Arab heavy crude have a LOT of sulfur. Venezuela extra heavy crude has even more. It goes like this; sweet crude, Arab heavy crude, and Venezuelan extra heavy crude give 0:5kg, 5kg, and 10kg of sulfur per barrel respectively. This is why the Strait of Hormuz and Venezuela both matter, not just for the nitrogen fertilizer like ammonia and Urea but because of the phosphorus too.
