I took a deep dive into the tariff-triggered stock sell-off and how incredibly grim it is. When you look at which companies have declined the most, it's extremely recessionary, with consumer staples hit hardest.

@dieworkwear I'm reading Golden State by Michael Hiltzik, we faced this issue in the 19th century: entitled white settlers refused to do low-paying work that non-white settlers were happy to take, which caused a ton of consequential, lasting racism (to this day).

i once interviewed a woman who works as a sewing operator at various Los Angeles garment factories. i asked if she's ever seen a native born person working as a sewer. she audibly laughed, saying "americans don't take these jobs." simple reason: very hard work, low pay

the idea you're going to reshore this type of manufacturing is laughable. wheat timbs would cost $500 if made here. basic vans would be $200. a north face jacket would be $750. americans are not paying that kind of money for clothes and shoes.

I can't speak for anyone else, but lectures are a terrible way for me to learn, a phenomenon that predates the iPhone by decades
(~15 years ago when I took all those Coursera courses I skipped all the lectures and just read the slides)

This is right. "Lecturing is bad pedagogy" has become received wisdom among the Pedagogy Gurus in recent years, and I really do wonder how much of this emergent common sense about what good teaching looks like is just retrofitting to a brave new world of Phone Broken Brains.

Just a small list of Berkeley PhD students funded mostly by NSF and DoD grants and the market cap of the companies they cofounded. That value alone should show that federal funding of basic research is a good investment for American taxpayers. (We could include numerous other startups cofounded by PhD students like databricks, google etc)
