unless you’re dealing with kokuji, or wasei kanji, if you will, it is a mistake to analyze a kanji without first looking at the chinese word it came from. it is also a mistake to overconsider modern lects, as japanese borrowings from chinese often stretch back centuries

@Chiuchiyin of course, even more computing terms have "equalized across the strait" these days: 用戶 and 使用者 are both accepted to mean "user"

@Chiuchiyin technical chinese is so interesting to me because even though most math terms are "compatible" between regions, computing terms have a split. for example, "optimization" is usually rendered 最佳化 in taiwan, and "activation" is 啟用

my favorite thing about this is that Hindi/Marathi also have the same word order (and to some extent the same cases) so when looking at glossed Korean or Japanese sentences I can just read the gloss piece by piece as Marathi and get a perfectly normal sentence out the other end

@cobbaltt @ManishEarth those were basic verbs. here’s a higher register example with sino-xenic equivalents, “to analyze”: - 分析 <fēnxī> ➡️ 分析看看 <fēnxī kànkàn> - 分析する <bunseki-suru> ➡️ 分析してみる <bunseki-shitemiru> - 분석하다 <bunseok-hada> ➡️ 분석해 보다 <bunseok-hae boda>

@cobbaltt @ManishEarth “to eat” vs “to try to eat”, cjk: - 吃 <chī> ➡️ 吃吃看 <chīchī kàn> or 吃看看 <chī kànkàn> - 食べる <taberu> ➡️ 食べてみる <tabetemiru> - 먹다 <meokda> ➡️ 먹어보다 <meokeoboda>

The Yifang fruit tea in Chinatown abandoned the franchise and they're censoring the Yifang logo in the promotional video they play on loop, it's very funny
