Auston Matthews says his gold medal will go to his family, with specifically his dad saying he’s been with him through thick and thin since he was young and even got emotional seeing him cry after the US won the gold on Sunday: 🥹
“It’s for family, my dad, he’s been my number one supporter. Both my parents have, but my dad driving me to practices, he’s been there through thick and thin for me. I love him so much… I gave him a big hug when we got off the ice. I’m gonna start crying because he was crying over there. … It’s an incredible feeling to win.”

No place better, no people better. Love this team, love this OL.
There is nothing like playing in the Navy Blue & Gold. It’s been a heck of a ride.

All Willie Fritz does is win.
At 65 years old, he’s still rebuilding programs and stacking results.
Kansas roots. Midwest toughness. Championships everywhere.
Willie Fritz was born in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, played his high school football at SM Northwest, where he was coached by Tony Severino (who later turned Rockhurst (MO) into a Midwest high school power), before going on to play at Pittsburg State University.
🏆 Winning everywhere he’s been
• Coffeyville Community College
NJCAA National Championship as a coordinator
• Blinn College
Two NJCAA National Championships
Coached Michael Bishop, later a Heisman finalist at Kansas State University
• University of Central Missouri/CMSU
MIAA Conference Champion
Consistently winning seasons
• Sam Houston State University
Multiple national championship game appearances
• Georgia Southern University
17–7 record
• Tulane University
4-8 in first year in 2016
12–2 (2022)
11–2 (2023)
Complete program rebuild
• University of Houston
2024: 4–8
2025: 9–3
Huge Year 2 jump in the Big 12
Career record: 221–127 (college)
And everywhere he’s been, one thing stays the same, Willie Fritz recruits Kansas HS/Juco and trusts Kansas players.
Old-school coach. Proven builder.
All he does is win. Underrated.
He will face LSU this Saturday in the Texas Bowl.

🏈 2025 Sports in Kansas – 4A Defensive Player of the Year
Cal Purvis – Wichita Kapaun Mt. Carmel, LB (Senior)
At 6’2”, 225 pounds, senior linebacker Cal Purvis was the tone-setter behind one of Kansas’ most physical defenses, leading Kapaun Mt. Carmel to its first football state championship since 1987 under head coach Weston Schartz. The Navy commit delivered a crushing two-way impact, finishing with 107 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 12 touchdowns, 500 rushing yards, and highlight plays that included a pick-six and a kick return touchdown. He was also named to the Sports in Kansas Top 11 All-Classes Team earlier this week.
Purvis was a force in just two varsity seasons at Kapaun, yet his production mirrors a four-year career: 225 tackles, 40 TFLs, 15 sacks, 29 touchdowns, nearly 1,400 rushing yards, and seven forced fumbles. His playing style combines downhill strength with sideline speed, the exact identity of the Crusaders’ championship defense.
And while football made him a statewide star, Purvis may be just as decorated on the diamond. He is a three-time First Team All-State baseball player, earning All-Metro, All-City, and All-American honors, and was part of a 2023 5A Baseball State Championship at Bishop Carroll, where he spent his first two high school seasons before transferring to Kapaun. His athletic career is a Wichita story through and through two schools, two sports, and success everywhere he goes.
Cal continues an underrated but powerful sports legacy. He will be the third Purvis sibling (Ben at Navy, Hank at UNLV/Purdue) to play FBS football, part of a family that has quietly produced Division I athletes. His favorite food is steak, he follows Overtime, and his favorite moment in sports, unsurprisingly, was winning a football state title as a senior. He credits his older brother Ben as the role model who set the standard. Navy landed another steal.
“He’s as talented as any big-time power 4 recruit I’ve ever had.” Schartz said.
A state champion in two sports, a Top 11 honoree, and the defensive anchor of a historic title run, Cal Purvis leaves Wichita as one of the most complete and underrated multi-sport athletes in Kansas. #sportsinkansas
