A sustainable global population is around 2-4 billion. We are well beyond that and currently speed running our extinction.

@Milk413213 @CeraGibson you could well have a neighborhood the size of the entire city of new york (or even bigger) just for painters and artists, or musicians, or writers, or moviepeople. or woodworkers, or brewers. it would be fucking amazing

@Milk413213 @CeraGibson pretty much anybody who wants to live in a place like new york or tokyo would want to live in a megacity, because there's even more to do. the bigger the city, the more people with any particular interest, the bigger the local events

@Milk413213 @CeraGibson dude it's not 1846 we now how to mitigate pretty much all of this (also no building shown above is tall?) the reason there's no light in the above picture is that northern france gets fuck all on sun hours.

@krisowe @CeraGibson No land comes with home - unable to garden or have privacy that's not indoors. Noise from neighbors. Tall buildings blocking light and views. No nature except for a few planted trees. More illnesses in tight quarters etc. etc.

@insuffbeca but one important thing in comparison to canada is that french was the language of the aristocracy and politics for the longest time, and flemish was seen as a peasant's tongue. this is no longer the case, owing both to flemish protests and the regions now strongeconomic standing

@insuffbeca it's iffy with german but brussels is officially bilingual but de facto french. however, in govt positions you pretty much have to speak french *and* flemish

0.0067% of the entire Population of Belgium live in the German speaking community of East Belgium and yet their language is entirely co-equal with French and Flemish despite the Region being a part of Belgium for just over a century. They even have three distinct passport covers.

I have written a long essay clearly and hopefully comprehensively making the case against official French-English billingualism in Canada. I hope you give it a read!

@Cyberw0t @CeraGibson you know how fucking big the US is, let alone the rest of the world? if you paved over every square inch of the states shown below in green, at the density mentioned here: x.com/krisowe/status…, you could comfortably house 8 billion people there.
krisowe tweet media
krisowe@krisowe

@CeraGibson we could house almost 1.1 billion people in an area the size of indiana at the modest density of levallois-perret, the densest town in europe. it looks like this:

@krisowe @CeraGibson Wait till you learn there’s only 8 billion people on earth. Anyone can throw out wild numbers with 0 data backing up the claims.

@Milk413213 @CeraGibson 1) tell me one thing about the above picture that feels unpleasant (except for the cars perhaps) 2) what difference does it make functionally if you live in a dense neighborhood of 1 sq mi or 36k sq mi? most of your life you'll never move further than 1-2 hrs radially

@OliverJia1014 dual citizenship restrictions are generally a pretty annoying concept.

There’s nothing impossible about this. The residency period is made shorter if you’re married and getting citizenship in any country is by definition on a case-by-case basis. Most people here don’t naturalize because they don’t want to give up any other citizenships they have.
Pubity@pubity

New laws in Japan will make it almost impossible to gain citizenship if you aren't born there. You have to live in Japan for 10 years just to qualify, followed by strict screenings given on a case-by-case basis.

@CeraGibson that's simply not true. all of our problems are due to inefficient land use for all use cases, lackluster recycling, and lagging adoption of renewable energy. we could house well in excess of 100 billion people.

unpopular opinion: 16GB is plenty if software engineers actually cared about memory efficiency. chrome eating 4GB for 12 tabs is not a hardware problem its a software disgrace. docker consuming 2GB idle is not a feature its laziness. we live in an era where people optimize every single token to save $0.001 on API costs but happily ship electron apps that eat 500MB to display a todo list. if the industry treated RAM the way we treat inference compute - obsessively measuring every byte - 16GB would feel luxurious. the hardware isnt the problem, the software is @adxtyahq
aditya@adxtyahq

never buy a 16GB RAM laptop in 2026. you’ll regret it within a week
