When you see this video you might think we have this perfect positive family but the truth is there have been seasons where we have gone through the darkest of times. There have been moments where our kids were struggling so much and making such horrible choices that my wife and I asked, “What did we do wrong? How can this be happening? How is our life turning out like this?”
There were times it looked like the enemy was winning and succeeded at dividing and destroying us. There were nights we cried ourselves to sleep wondering how things could or would ever change. There were mornings we woke up feeling hopeless and defeated.
During the darkest time I wept often and cried out to God asking for help but not sure if he was listening. Kathryn will admit there were days she gave up hope.
Last night after we had a fun time dancing together as a family, Kathryn and I prayed while in bed and deeply thanked God for our family and how much our kids have healed and grown. Kathryn turned to me and said that video you shared on your story tonight is going to make people think we always have it all together. We need to tell them it wasn’t always like this. We need to tell them how hard it was so those who are struggling and suffering can have hope that things can change. Then she asked me, “What advice can we give for a family that is struggling?”
Here’s what we came up with:
1.Pray a lot. I prayed all the time asking God to heal me and my family.
2.Kathryn was honestly so distraught she found it hard to pray and at times thought all hope was lost but she never stopped loving and supporting our kids and worked hard to keep the lines of communication open. She would always say “I just need to get my eyes on them”.
3.Keep loving your kid(s) unconditionally and never tell them you are giving up on them.
4.Don’t blame your spouse. Don’t blame yourself. We did both early on and it nearly destroyed ourselves and our marriage. Look at yourself and see what you can do better now to be a better partner and parent. Be a team that supports each other.
5.Don’t live with guilt or shame. We did this as well early on. You can’t change the past. But you can heal from it. Focus on healing together now.
6.Remember God doesn’t have grandkids. Surrender them to God. They are His children and all change and transformation will come from their relationship with God. Pray. Love. Believe. Surrender.
7.Never give up. Change and miracles can happen. We have witnessed them and we pray you do too.
