“In #Thailand, #Disabled and #Neurodivergent people are not very well integrated or supported in the education system. I benefitted from opportunities to #StudyAbroad. Without that, my story would have been very different.” Originally from Thailand, Piangfan faced significant hurdles as she grew up with #Autism. At a time, earning a degree seemed like an insurmountable task, as she faced stereotypes from others who never believed that someone with autism could complete school, not least a #Doctorate. “I was the first #Autistic Thai student to be funded by the EU. I am very fortunate to have received multiple #Scholarships from my sixth form, to my undergraduate degree in the United States, to my master’s in Thailand, and then for my PhD in the UK. “On the way, I have been helped by many people, met my wife, and become a UK nationally ranked athlete. “This may all sound amazing, but it does come with many hurdles, from people's #Stereotypes towards autistic people to the way some individuals have treated me, not just because of my autism but also because of my #Race and #Sexuality. “I'm active in #DisabilityAdvocacy in lots of ways, including in sport, and I was chosen by the Thai Ministry of Social Development and Human Security to have a film professionally made based on my life story. “The film tells a simplified version of the story of my life and struggles as an #AutisticStudent and how I came to study abroad. I want it to show how my life might have been different if I had been supported from the beginning. Too many people were shocked that someone like me could be in #HigherEducation. That has to change. “Every child deserves to be seen, heard and believed in – regardless of #Ability.” Yesterday, Dr Piangfan Naksukpaiboon graduated with a PhD in #Medicine, specialising in #ColorectalCancer. Congratulations, Dr Naksukpaiboon. What a wonderful example you are to anyone out there who thinks university isn’t for them. I had a big interview last week (permanent lecturership at QUB) and found out today that I was successful. If that’s not reason enough to open this bad boy, then I don’t know what is.
