Today marks the end of a chapter for FreightWaves. Our SONAR offering has reached a sufficient scale where it will be standalone and the media business is being divested. The media business will be in familiar hands. I am acquiring FreightWaves media and will merge it with my other media businesses, covering aviation and marine. This new entity will be called Firecrown. I am really excited about this. Now, the SONAR team can focus on scaling our SaaS business without the distractions of media & and our media team will be provided new investment and resources across a much larger media platform. We first met @carmeloanthony right after Hurricane Sandy in the Rockaways in 2012. We were immediately inspired by his humility, generosity and empathy, one of the first celebrities distributing food to those displaced across NYC. 12 years later, amidst a NYC tech renaissance, it was our honor to host a fireside @EniacVC HQ today with Melo and his new fund Isos7 (with George Barrios, Michelle Wilson, Brian Flinn, and @kunalm107). Melo spoke about the overlap between peak human performance and competition in the NBA and investing- namely, around the importance of diverse superpowers on teams. The proliferation of sports content is mind boggling, e.g. Messi and Ronaldo spreading Soccer globally, the NBA gaining popularity in Dubai and India, Cricket's biggest stage coming to NY, but also High School sports on the rise. In shifting gears to AI (because, of course), we discussed the potential of fans to pay to watch robots playing basketball. As a firm born and raised in NYC, it's our pride and duty to help local founders and fund managers realize their potential here. New Yorkers are resilient together, stick together, rise together, and the NYC Tech ecosystem is benefitting greatly from these types of epic collaborations.
