I’m not active on X. My work lives on LinkedIn, where I write for community bank CEOs and boards about leverage, timing, and optionality — so decisions aren’t made under pressure. → linkedin.com/in/kurtknutson…

In 2005, Kurt Knutson founded Freedom Bank in Overland Park, Kansas. In 2022, he sold it to Landmark Bank in Manhattan, Kansas. In 2023, he wrote a book about his experience — The Art of Selling Your Bank. Thanks for sending my way, @kurtknutson. 🙏🙏🙏

If I were a banker, I would read Kurt’s book for three reasons. First, he walks through a real-life bank sale that he just completed. It’s the only book I’ve come across that’s like it — half memoir, half practical guide to selling a small bank. (Freedom Bank was a few hundred million in assets, I believe, when it sold.) Second, despite the title, Kurt isn’t advising banks to sell. What he’s advising is that a bank should always be in a condition to sell — pristine, like formal living rooms in the 1990s. He also believes, and I don’t disagree, that thinking in these terms elevates one’s cognizance of capital allocation. Third, all reading is good reading.

In his opening at the hearing on SVB, Brown slams VC that ran on SVB, causing its failure, and then begged for a bailout.

@khaslett @depositgatherer @khaslett your live tweeting is greatly appreciated - capital flows to where it is welcome and treated well - the regulators disregard corporate finance - more capital can create a riskier de novo because they may need to stretch on credit to deploy more capital fast for return

Kiah Lau Haslett is a bank reporter (she/her)
Playing the OCC M&A Symposium in the background and presenter talks about the lack of de novos. I've written recently looking at the bankers craziest enough to a de novo today, but it struck me: Why is it easier to open a neobank than de novo? It can't just be the charter.
