@stellarmorticia Beautiful photo! Too bad there’s so much dust on the lens. Oh, wait! Are those the sturs (sp?) I’ve heard so much about? I’ve lived Chicago too long. Hope you’re loving those nights!

For anyone still on whatever this platform is now, our paper on land use and light emission as observed from a high altitude balloon mission is now available! You can access it here: authors.elsevier.com/a/1hWiD564SXoRB

How?! How is this not illegal? This car was a block away and this is the light it cast in our house. And I live on the 2nd floor! @StBrianAerial

@darkskychi Talk went great! Over 100 people there to hear about the importance of natural nights, the Palos UNSP and how to address light pollution for all of us animals. We may have some new @darkskychi recruits!

@RestoringDrknss Did you know that light pollution is limiting our ability to detect potentially hazardous asteroids? doi.org/10.1093/mnras/… If ground based observatories can’t see them coming we’re no better than dinosaurs. Turn down the lights and protect the planet!

Amazing talk with stunning visuals at today’s #AGU22 plenary by @BabakTafreshi Let’s hope it inspired more researchers to consider #ALAN as an environmental issue.

@JohnBarentine @MayorFrey Is lighting the solution to crime or a panacea? Here is an unedited 2016 ISS image of two neighborhoods in and next to Chicago and the number of reported crimes that year.

Also, @MayorFrey: your statement that "criminals fear a well-lit street" is unfounded in fact. I can show you plenty of studies to the contrary. If you're interested in learning what street lighting actually *can* do for communities, have someone on your staff contact me.

The rare time Chicago streetlights aren’t a significant contributor to light pollution 🙄

@JohnBarentine Are you thinking about a legal definition? If so the word “artificial” needs a lot of clarification. “ALAN” does not distinguish between useful or polluting light. Also the light on a microwave display is artificial, light, at night per the words. So… yes.

So, speaking of cases, what say you all? What's your verdict? And are any of you all sciency folk interested in writing a short paper with me about it?

Light Pollution Twitter: have we any consensus definition of "artificial light at night"? I was asked today to define it but couldn't immediately come up with anything precise. And I didn't find anything in the scholarly literature. Is the phrase itself the definition?
