Stronger health systems save lives. In Niger State, @WHO is working with the Government to strengthen primary health care so women, men, and children can get the care they need when they need it. Routine immunization is improving. Coverage for MCV2 has reached 62% and IPV2 71%, up from below 40%. This means more girls and boys are protected from vaccine preventable diseases. During a visit to Minna, WHO Representative @DrPavelUrsu met health workers, reviewed progress, and heard directly about the challenges and solutions shaping PHC in the state. @WHO also visited communities affected by the recent attack in Shiroro LGA and met survivors receiving care at IBB Specialist Hospital. Health workers acted quickly, and WHO is supporting emergency coordination, trauma care guidance, and essential supplies. This work is possible because of the commitment of the @NigeriaGov, frontline health workers, partners, and donors investing in stronger PHC and emergency readiness. Every child deserves the chance to grow, learn and thrive. Nigeria is taking important steps to make good nutrition a reality for more families. This week, the @WHONigeria’s @DrPavelUrsu met with the House Committee on Nutrition and Food Security, chaired by Hon. Chike John Okafor, to deepen collaboration that supports Nigeria’s efforts to reduce malnutrition and strengthen food security. Nigeria continues to face a high burden of undernutrition. NDHS 2024 shows little or no improvement since 2018: child wasting rose from 7%→8%, underweight 22%→27%, stunting 37%→40%, and exclusive breastfeeding remains at 29%. With renewed focus on evidence‑based policies and stronger systems, there’s a real opportunity to accelerate progress for millions of children.

Every day, millions of Nigerians are protected by stronger regulatory systems that ensure the medicines and health products they rely on are safe, effective, and of assured quality. Behind every approved medicine is a system working to protect families, strengthen trust, and expand access to essential care. @DrPavelUrsu met with Professor Mojisola Adeyeye of @NafdacAgency to reinforce Nigeria’s steady progress toward ensuring every community can access quality-assured essential medicines and diagnostics.

When a child remains unvaccinated, the entire community becomes vulnerable. In Rivers State, the Measles-Rubella (MR) campaign aims to protect over four million children aged 9 months to 14 years from life-threatening diseases. Under the leadership of @NPHCDAng and funding support from @GAVI, @WHO is supporting the Rivers State Government, @UNICEF and other key partners and vaccination teams who are reaching homes, schools, and hard-to-reach communities.

LOSS OF A HERO 🕊️ On behalf of Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman–led NARD NOC, E-NOC, NEC Members, the Crown Prince of NARD, and the entire NARDITES, we mourn with heavy hearts the tragic and untimely passing of Dr. Salome Oboyi, Senior Registrar in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BHUTH), Jos. Dr. Salome passed on Monday, 2nd February 2026, after contracting Lassa Fever from a patient under her care—a painful reminder of the daily risks doctors take while serving humanity. She did not die chasing fame. She did not die seeking applause. She died doing her job—saving lives. A selfless doctor. A devoted healer. A fallen hero. Her death is not just a personal loss to her family or an institutional loss to BHUTH; it is a collective tragedy for the Nigerian medical community and a glaring symbol of a systemic failure that continues to claim the lives of our finest minds in silence. We sincerely commiserate with the Management of Bingham University Teaching Hospital, her colleagues, friends, her grieving family, the entire NARDITES, and the Nigerian medical community at large. May her sacrifice not be forgotten. May her death not be in vain. May her story awaken a nation. Rest in perfect peace Dr. Salome Oboyi 🕊️ Your light will not fade.
