Potential is increasing for another significant winter storm to impact the eastern United States this coming weekend. It is too early to know the details, but please keep updated with the latest forecasts this week!

A first for me: In nearly 42 years of forecasting GA weather, never had an Ice Storm Warning and Tornado Watch on the same map. Severe storm threat stays south, but additional icing is likely this afternoon.

Ya, this is bad. Record-level cancelations across DL, WN, UA, AA Fri: 2,443 (14% of all flights) Sat: 2,439 (16% of all flights) Both are worse than the worst day of the FAA shutdown. Doesn't even include delays yet.

Thursday afternoon update: the winter storm watch has been expanded across metro Atlanta where freezing rain is expected to coat surfaces with 1/4 to 1/2 inch of ice. More ice and a little snow or sleet is possible in the mountains. I'm tracking the winter storm live on Channel 2

We are still several days out from this event so shifts in the weather model guidance is to be expected. Generally longer-range models handle the cold air wedge poorly thus uncertainties in the southward extent of wintry precipitation remains. Don't let your guard down. #gawx

EURO is icy. GFS is snow and ice. Huge signal for Saturday on almost all models that go out that far. Cold air at the surface with plenty of moisture may make a winter storm to remember.

The 12z Euro is in. It's a colder run. It shows a swath of heavy snow accumulation with a crippling ice storm to the South.

Monday Update: we're 5-6 days away from possible wintry weather affecting our area. The weather pattern has the potential to bring snow, sleet, freezing rain, and rain. I'll be fine-tuning the specific amounts and locations of each all week. Stay tuned to Channel 2 for updates.
