In practice, this just means he refuses to empower his executive team to make a single independent decision. I watched him spend 45 minutes yesterday debating the exact shade of blue used on a secondary landing page for a minor marketing campaign. He bypassed the entire design department to directly message a junior contractor with his specific color hex codes. When the marketing VP politely pointed out that this wasn't the best use of a CEO's time, she was accused of creating unnecessary silos. A true flat organization implies mutual trust and decentralized authority. It doesn't mean the person who signs the paychecks gets to play creative director on projects he fundamentally doesn't understand. If you want to micromanage the graphic designers, you shouldn't have hired a seasoned leadership team to run your company. We're just highly paid spectators watching you refuse to delegate.
