Australia now has access to a new marine heatwave outlook tool that provides up to four months’ advance indication of the likelihood of ocean temperature extremes. Developed by @CSIRO and @BOM_au, the tool is designed to support awareness and preparedness for marine heatwaves.

Academic publishing is perhaps the greatest scam perpetrated on intelligent people 1) Write grants (unpaid) 2) Do research 3) Write papers 4) Peer review (unpaid) 5) PAY up to $12K to publish 6) Need publications to get grants (back to step 1) Publishers: 38% profit margins

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT📣: I haven’t been this excited to be part of something new in 15 years… Thrilled to reveal the passion project I’ve been working on for the past year and a half!🙀🥳 It started from my frustration with the depressing effect that the current publishing system has on the well-being of myself, my team, and pretty much every scientist I know (maybe you’ve noticed from my stupid jokes… :) I was exhausted of dealing with the huge delays, reviewers that can be abusive, and how arbitrary it all is. Unfortunately, the most important factors are often WHO your reviewers are and who YOU are... It’s clear we need alternatives or at least ways to improve the situation. So, together with a really special and talented team we worked to develop this idea into “qed” a platform where you can get CONSTRUCTIVE feedback on your own work or CRITICALLY assess other people’s papers. It can be a real difference maker if many of you join us (thousands have tried it already, but today we release a NEW and much stronger version ;) Let’s harness qed to put the power back in the scientists’ hands, to do, to read & to publish science on our own terms. I’m dying for you to TRY IT, and it’s very simple - just drop a paper (the link to the website is in the replies👇) - it’s completely secure, private, and free, and you get results fast. Please show your support, SHARE, tell your friends, and let’s be the revolution 🫵!

Coral reefs around Australia continue to be devastated by mass coral bleaching events triggered by increasingly prevalent marine heatwaves. So can scientists intervene to save the reefs from disappearing? For over a decade, researchers have been developing cutting-edge techniques to boost the heat tolerance of corals and help reefs withstand rising ocean temperatures. Dr Kate Quigley @la__cientifica from @jcu @uwaoceans is involved in this research. She says that these methods can help buy time for some reefs but that global action on climate change is the only long-term solution. “It's important to understand that these conservation efforts, while promising, are not a standalone solution – they are no silver bullet,” said Dr Quigley. "Ideally, we would let nature take its course. However, given the pace of warming driven by emissions, corals may not be adapting fast enough to keep up, or some species may not be adapting at all. “Human intervention through 'assisted evolution' aims to compress the timescales needed for evolution, giving corals a fighting chance to adapt to warmer waters in the short term.” Read more of what Kate had to say in our Q&A: biodiversitycouncil.org.au/news/coral-ree… @UWAresearch #coralreef #marineconservation #climatechange #SaveTheReef #coralrestoration #biodiversity #GreatBarrierReef #Ningaloo

We are urging the NSW Independent Planning Commission to reject a proposal to restart NSW’s Redbank Coal Power Station by burning biomass, which would principally come from clearing native vegetation. The project would supercharge land clearing in western NSW while pumping as much carbon into the atmosphere as a coal-fired power station. Learn more, see our submission, or listen to the presentations our experts gave at the public hearing. biodiversitycouncil.org.au/news/reject-re…
