The Economist: When were you last in the UK? Musk: A few years ago The Economist: Exactly. I live there. That is nonsense. The numbers also disprove what you say. London is a much safer city than any city in the US. You have painted Europe and the UK as overrun with terrifying Muslim immigrants, there's rape on every corner, there's civilizational destruction. When Lottie Viola walked on to Downing Street for Andy Burnham’s first speech outside No 10, she found it hard to believe her TikTok had got her there. “Trying to explain to my older family members how I got into Downing Street was so funny,” the 19-year-old said. “But we’re in a new era of news and a new era of politics. It’s one that actually is quite unconventional.” Viola and four of her friends were all invited to Downing Street for the role they had played in propelling Burnham’s popularity — not through hours of canvassing, but through glossy, aesthetic videos for teens online. The five are behind reams of Andy Burnham social media content compiling vintage clips and shots of the new prime minister, mostly from his days in New Labour, with glossy filters and set to pop music to push his allure. These so-called “edits” were popularised by young people involved in fanbases, typically for boy bands or footballers rather than middle-aged politicians.
