Hi. Dad here. We wanted to provide an update on fundraising for Alex's followers and supporters. We understand that times are very difficult and everyone is fighting their own battles.
We are only trying to do our best for our child and we don't have the financial means ourselves. There are many other deserving causes out there as well - we are not saying we are more important but I am saying that my child is the most important to me.
This is for the people that follow Alex and are inspired by him and his goodness.
Alexander’s Journey: Surgical procedures and Clinic Treatments 2024/25 and beyond.
The Go Fund Me fundraiser description has been amended from its original post to reflect changes in medical decisions for treatment and progression. It originally was set up to cover medical checks and treatments over the past few years in preparation of a final surgery in 2023. Some money has already been spent on these visits and treatments as well as weekly Chiropractic and Physical therapy treatments.
This journey began over eight years ago and through the love and support of friends & strangers (who became friends) we raised a phenomenal amount of money to save Alex's life. He underwent lifesaving treatment in Kansas City, U.S.A. after his misdiagnosis by the NHS in England. That treatment always assumed a final surgery when Alex reached skeletal maturity (in around 2023/24) but we hoped that the NHS would accept their failings and responsibility and take this on. Sadly, they have not: by the grace of God and the kindness of people Alex is here.
Alex is now in remission from his Ewing's Sarcoma Cancer but, as he continued to grow, the original plan was for him to undergo a further final surgery to remove the telescopic element of his prosthetic femur and replace it with a final adult version. Alex's prosthetic femur can extend no further as it has almost reached the extent of the internal mechanism and the small length that is left is held by scar tissue.
We travelled to Kansas City in March 2023 anticipating pre-operation checks and plans for the final conclusive surgery. Surprisingly the hospital has decided that it will be too risky to undertake the planned surgery due to the real likelihood of permanent nerve damage and complications and risks associated with a significant amount of scar tissue from the previous two surgeries. Alex’s Paediatric oncological surgeon has made it clear that the chances of Alex surviving his cancer were so slim especially after a lengthy misdiagnosis: but he defied all the odds and did so. They want him to live to enjoy his life and any further treatment should seek to reduce his pain and discomfort and aid him in correct posture and alignment.
The scar tissue has always been obstructive in extending his prosthesis, but the intensive work and treatment has broken down the scar tissue to a point where we have managed to get almost every centimetre of extension from it. The likelihood of us achieving any further lengthening is minimal without specific surgical procedures to breakdown the directly relevant scar tissue.
As he grows his spine and hips become more misaligned and his gait worsens. This means he is in considerable discomfort daily and despite his walking aids is in pain when travelling anything other than short distances. Additionally, he is seeking to rectify previous muscle wastage and a lack of flexibility due to scar tissue preventing his knee from flexing correctly.
What has been proposed is several smaller less invasive procedures combined with radical physiotherapy and Chiropractic treatment that will reduce scar tissue and significantly assist in strength, mobility and flexibility. This will be combined with Orthotics. The Hospital has also suggested we undertake an annual oncology check for the next 10 years. Alex will also require checks to confirm if the radiation therapy has affected his fertility.
This fundraising incorporates also the associated needs that we will encounter along the way including further aids and adaptations, prior consultations and post-procedure check-ups. He will also receive cancer scans as he is no longer eligible for them under the U.K. protocol. The funds needed will also cover flights, accommodation and general expenses associated with long stays away from home as well as physical therapy and osteopathy treatment to assist him weekly in the U.K and periods of intensive treatment when in the U.S.
The procedures planned for the remainder of this year and into 2025 are three further visits to the United States and one to the Czech Republic. This will include Botox procedures, Scar revision surgery, Hi-Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU) and Electro stimulation. From 2024 we will undertake one visit back to the U.S. annually for Cancer checks and when he reaches 18 years of age to check on his fertility.
The prosthesis itself is likely to need replacing in thirty or forty years and we plan on investing some of these funds and some of my retirement money when I leave my job into a high-interest account to help manage that in the future if possible.
The total cost we have estimated is £180,000 GBP ($230,000 USD). We have separated that amount into two Fundraisers (one here in the U.K. managed by us which is now finished and one in the U.S. managed by our friends Nancy & Charity) as many of our supporters are in the U.S. and that will avoid large currency exchange and administrative fees for them. The U.K. fundraiser stands at £121,000 GBP and has reached its target and the U.S. Fundraiser has target of $80,000 USD (approximately £60,000 GBP).
We continue to benefit from Sales made by Arcanum Press (the publishers of our book and other titles they publish).
Alex is a force for good in this world and it is a better place for him being in it.
