Someone who gets a first in maths, from the LSE, in their first two years, isn’t ‘stupid’. They can be wrong, of course - anyone can be wrong - but pointing to a lack of intellectual aptitude, or lack of credentials, is plainly idiotic. Like I say, big part is his class.

Something these guys struggle with is Gary Stevenson sounds like he does, while having a first in maths from the LSE, and a masters from Oxford. 20 years ago the right would have pointed to that as evidence of grammar schools working. Now we just get nonsense.

Why are people fighting for kids to stay addicted and glued to screens - very weird….. Most of us millennials didn’t grow up on screens and our childhood was amazing.

My issue is that you are saying it is a backdoor to digital ID & are now proposing alternative solutions to the ban, instead of suggesting alternative solutions to digital ID(they exist). It just makes me believe that a lot of you are just using digital ID as a Trojan horse to oppose the ban. I also don't want digital ID & I will continue to push for the government to use alternative methods that don't compromise our safety. However, I can do that, & still see the sense in a system-level regulation of social media use for children. Again, multiple ideas can coexist. We are thinking people fgs.

The people I don't get the most are the "kids will find a way" crowd 😅 Think about the things western society almost UNIVERSALLY agrees children shouldn't have: alcohol, cigarettes, & restricted physical substances. We put age restrictions on them b/c we understand the devastating physical & developmental consequences. Do teenagers still find workarounds? Absolutely. But the fact that a 15-yr-old can sneak a drink doesn't mean we should abolish the legal drinking age. Even the most rebellious adults who accessed drugs early in life will fiercely protect their own kids from having open access to those same substances. So why is the proposed social media ban facing such fierce backlash? B/c the damage is silent. You can't see an algorithm eroding a child's mind in a lab the way you can see a cigarette damaging their lungs. Let's make the invisible harm visible(which is what I believe the campaigns leading up to this should've done a lot more). Nearly 40% of children ages 8 to 12 are already using social media. Adolescents spending more than 3 hrs daily on these platforms face double the risk of mental health issues like anxiety & depression. When asked about the impact on their body image, 46% of adolescents aged 13-17 said social media actively makes them feel worse. For teenage girls using platforms like Instagram, about 1 in 3 reported feeling worse about their bodies due to the app. As many as 72% of teens say they have been cyberbullied. Cyberbullying is more strongly correlated with suicide attempts than traditional face-to-face bullying. These apps are altering brain structure during a highly vulnerable developmental window, affecting areas like the amygdala that manage emotional learning. If a legal, physical product was doing this much quantifiable damage to an ENTIRE generation, we'd pull it from the shelves immediately. We need to stop pretending screens are safe just b/c there's no smoke.

Banning social media for kids is necessary to change the culture around it. Like how we banned smoking in restaurants. It changed our views and habits on smoking. Culture is everything. It is how we save our kids.

I have zero issues with digital ID Nothing to hide- if it catches more criminals and makes my life easier roll it out !!! Like they don’t have access to all of our stuff anyway 🙄

@KirstieMAllsopp @TonyGoldSE There’s so many parental controls to limit screen time or time on certain apps, I’ve had no issues controlling what my kids use or saying no if I don’t want them to have certain apps, I don’t need the government to parent my children.

So you aren’t worried about the kids, you’re just worried you’ll be questioned regarding what you want to see on the internet?

@TonyGoldSE Social Media harms children. Big tech has no desire to restrict the amount of time kids spend on smart phone, ‘cos $$$ is about how long/how many eyes in screen. Big tech cannot afford the degree of “filter” that would really protect kids. Where is the nuance?
