In my opinion, two fundamental rights trump all others: 1. The right to choose our leader in a free and fair election, regardless of whom we choose (even if it is the village idiot or the embarrassing drunk); and 2. The right to express ourselves whether or not the leader considers it comfortable or uncomfortable. Decree 4 of 1984 under the Military criminalised free speech, whether what you said was right or wrong. Even saying what is right could land you in the gulag or send you to the great beyond. May we never see such again! The right to vote out the government we don’t want was expressed in the 2015 elections, whether for good or bad. May we continue to enjoy that right. For me and my family, we say “Amen” to both prayers. I don’t know about you and yours. It is NOT about who built the 3rd Mainland Bridge. It is about whether we have the Freedom which the Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen said is the true measure of Development. That doesn’t excuse the fact that Democracy in Africa has not delivered security, good schools, good healthcare, nourishing food, or world-class infrastructure. But, in most cases, neither has military dictatorship. As Churchill once said, of all the political systems that have been tried in world history, Democracy is the least bad. Our focus should be on finding the form of governance that works for us, as some other countries have done. Western-style Democracy may not be it but, to my mind, it is certainly not military dictatorship by deranged tyrants and Presidents-for-life whose training and orientation is only to kill and destroy. This is especially the case as Africa has a poor history of producing benevolent dictators. You are free to disagree with me. After all, we are in a democracy. But try to do so with decorum and home training. Selah!

Discussions focused on a key question: Are young innovators in Africa’s agrifood systems receiving the support, investment, and resources they need to grow, scale, and succeed?
