Recovering “Your uncle’s boyfriend.” Now: human rights governance & constitutional reform. Public intellectual (self-appointed).

@SinfulSultan @freespiritNWK When you hold hands in public, or you wear a cute wig to the mall, they say you’re shoving it in their faces. It’s when we’re closeted and shrinking ourselves in social situations that we’re praised for being unproblematic, but they don’t want to call it what it is - homophobia

He’s not lying though Batswana even love saying “the problem is gay people ba bata special treatment” when you call them out or “they want to shove it down our throat” that time it’s just gay people simply existing without hiding their sexuality.

Nah mothaka yole yo reng Batswana ba homophobic ka tswa na batla re mo imota cause he sees himself as different and maybe easily noticeable. Mme rona re kgona go nna indifferent and just mind our own business. Ha gongwe ebile ha go na yo lemogileng gore he’s gay.

@JoeyKambai And what exactly is being rubbed in their faces anyway? When we grow up and live in a world built for the comfort and progression of heterosexuality, they’re the ones getting married, getting preferential loans, kissing in churches and grieving openly, not queerfolk

It baffles me that they just want to sweep it under the rug💀 and then you have them commenting with we don't have a problem with gays just as long they do it privately but heterosexuals are all in everyones faces, we have a long way to go in this conservative country

Unfortunately saying Botswana isn’t homophobic, or that queer people don’t suffer violent hateful attacks simply because you haven’t seen or heard about it, doesn’t mean it is so.

With the amount of violent crimes reported daily in the country, I’m surprised that there’s people who are surprised there’s violent homophobia in this same country. Like…how are you surprised?

📌🥺 waitse it's so disheartening seeing our experiences being so dismissed...and the passive-aggressive comments, "jokes", being regularly told "wena ke go rape", or wena ga o ise o utlwe **** ke gore where do these pple live mme gone? Batswana are homophobic, majority of them

@JoeLesedi @ieatpineappl3 @tayd_brazen There’s at least 5 documented cases of queer people suffering mob attacks jus for being gay/lesbian/trans in Botswana in the last 7 yrs, including one that resulted in the loss of life in Sep 2025. So yes, it happens in Botswana too.

What about your friend who’s in a lesbian or gay relationship, have you seen them walk in the mall, or sit in a restaurant holding their partners hand, on the table?

Ask yourself, in the social spaces you frequent; the Sunday soccers, at church, do queer people feel safe there? Is that safety part of the fabric that makes the space, or did someone have to make a special concession there? Can the man in a wig sing at your church, for example?

@AmantleTsh38229 @mlungisi_prince In the last 7yrs alone, there’s at least 5 cases of Batswana attacked simply for being gay/lesbian/trans, including a transwoman that was stripped and left in the street in Gabs. Last Sept a gay man lost his life in Maun. What you see in other countries…it happens here too.

@mlungisi_prince Lona lo maaka banna. You mean homophobia in Botswana can be compared with what we see in other countries where homosexuals can't even safely walk in the streets? The worst you can get in BW for being a homosexual is getting clowned on, or getting your ass kicked for being touchy

@tayd_brazen I get what you mean, generally, a lot of Batswana seem indifferent. At least in public, but you look at surveys like the Afrobarometer or at social media comments, and you’ll see a darker picture. The homophobia in Botswana is real and tangible.

I’d go as far as saying Lesego Chombo is a far better minister than Dr. Modise. I’ve watched Lesego over the past few months and I think she is finally putting on her big girl panties. Something is different, something has shifted — and I can only hope it’s not performative.
