Bundesliga club Mainz 05 have lost an appeal against a court decision that saw them pay former player Anwar El Ghazi €1.5million (£1.3m; $1.7m) after they were found to have unfairly dismissed him. El Ghazi had his contract terminated by the club on November 3, 2023 after posting about the Israel-Gaza war on social media. El Ghazi was initially suspended by Mainz in October of that year for the pro-Palestinian post, with the club describing it as “unacceptable”. His suspension was lifted shortly after and Mainz said that they had warned the player, who had shown “remorse”. However, El Ghazi said in a subsequent post that he did not “regret” or “distance himself” from his initial words. Mainz then terminated his contract. 🔗 nytimes.com/athletic/68014…

@AdamMcKola calling for our best centre half to be sold in the summer? We're not in a position to be playing around like that. Since he got over his torrid spell he's been quality for us and our most consistent centre half, just like be was when he joined us!
