Canada’s current situation is being reframed here as a “timed self-use” opportunity. The political and media rhetoric supplies “liquidity” (collective speculation, belief, attention, and commitment) to a novel “possibility,” namely a self-reliant, economically diversified, and “strong” Canada anchored in middle-power alliances rather than the old US-backed bargain. This “liquidity” flows through three temporal structures. The unfolding of different levels or priorities in time (what gets ranked higher now), sudden shifts or reversals in how events unfold (tipping-point moments), and Canadians’ own active use of these structures in self-understanding and practical confrontations (we actively project and “confront” in order to make an outcome real).

@latemixes @BohuslavskaKate Do you really think your country wouldn’t pay more to have hegemony, and that it would have been granted by paying the same amount? If you want hegemony and total power, you pay more, if we all pay the same, then you are at the same hegemonic level than europeans.

STUBB: I think, at the end of the day, United States will find themselves in quite a lonely place. I'm most pro-American president in Europe. I'm avid transatlanticist. I want relationship to work. But I also fully realize that, with certain patterns of behavior, there's going to be a feeling of, "Okay, if you treat me like that, I don't feel very good about it." We can see that with European states, Gulf states and many others. I hope that it's in interest of United States to have close friends and allies, if it wants to continue to be one of the world's hegemons.

This is how the illusion works. A press release becomes a promise. A promise becomes a headline. The headline becomes proof that the good times are just around the corner. Carney stands at the centre of it. By the time September arrives the summit will likely deliver what these things always (often?) deliver. A handful of photo opportunities and a few carefully worded MOUs (that mean almost nothing). The 50 trillion will have shrunk to a more modest number, then to a target, then to an aspiration, and finally to something best forgotten until the next announcement. The Canadian commentariat will still be there, though, ready for the next round.

@JoshDehaas The content they want banned is probably "harmful" because it introduces competing possibilities. Different ways of seeing group identity, different rankings of what matters, different futures that don’t line up with the one being pushed.

@MarkJCarney Some Canadian journos are pining for the pre-Charter veto. Today it would be federal politicians in Ottawa telling Quebec or Alberta what their own people can and cannot legislate.

44 years ago today, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was signed into law. It laid the foundation for a stronger, more just Canada. It is up to us all to protect the values of freedom and equality enshrined in the Charter — to keep building a better Canada, for all.

I genuinely wonder whether Canadian journalists and pundits grasp the long arc consequences of their "doings."

The collective output of Canadian pundits and journalists socializes deference to federal authority and judicial supremacy as the default stance. They rarely pause to trace how their daily choices, story selection, language calibration, and guest curation function as infrastructure for that centralizing current. Long term, this isn't neutral stewardship of discourse. It's participatory engineering of the polity itself, with accountability forever outsourced elsewhere.

"Justice Minister Sean Fraser says he has significant concerns with the way the provinces are overriding Charter rights by invoking the notwithstanding clause, and he's prepared to establish guardrails around its use at the federal level..." If the provinces are the problem, and they are, why only restrict it at the federal level? The plan at Confederation, and for decades after, was that the federal government would prevent provincial governments from abusing rights, using the disallowance power. Eventually that role was taken over by the courts, and the Charter. But if the Charter is fast becoming a dead letter, via the notwithstanding clause, then Canada would be left, for the first time in our history, with no effective protection for rights. That is, we will, unless the feds act. The feds have the power to protect our rights. They should use it. Charter at a turning point as it turns 44 | CBC News cbc.ca/news/politics/…

The EU’s circling Canada like a desperate divorcee at last call “We share a tiny rock in the Arctic!” they squeal. If we’re playing the “proximity equals destiny” game, the better fit is the union to the south. EU cities are looking like open-air festivals for knife crime. But sure, let’s drag the Great White North into this circus so we can pay for Greek pensions and German solar farms.

To solve the problem of high earners once and for all, introduce a strict "No Repeat High Earners" system. In the first year someone exceeds $180,000, they face a 100% marginal tax on everything above that threshold, plus a 50% wealth redistribution levy on the excess. Repeat offenders in any five year window trigger a 150% clawback, a three year professional blacklist from high paying roles, and a 30% freeze on liquid assets over $1 million. Chronic offenders receive a lifetime personal income cap, permanent revocation of professional licenses, forced relocation to equity adjustment zones, and intergenerational penalties that limit their children's access to federal aid and scholarships. Realtime AI surveillance closes all loopholes, turning any attempt to earn big again into career ending financial and personal ruin.
Dr. Rita Ded 🏳️‍🌈🇻🇪🇮🇱🇺🇦🇵🇸@DrRitaDed

Here's an idea. Tax the rich. Anyone earning over 180k per year should get taxed at 100% No one needs to be earning that much. Redistribute the wealth.
