She was taken to the hospital and that same night reported the rape at a violence support center. As her lawyer later explained, Eva’s only desire was to stop these monsters from raping other girls. She described the cowards as “African boys aged between 16 and 20.” In the days that followed, Eva spiraled into depression, insomnia, missed school, crying fits, and overwhelming guilt. Despite the huge support from her community and friends, she could no longer carry the weight of what they had done to her. Eva took her own life.

Now I can finally post, last month this uber driver sexually harassed me and attempted to sexually assault me. I reported what happened to the police. Unfortunately, they said there wasn’t enough evidence to take the case further, so I’m posting to spread awareness!

The Kyoto Aquarium in Japan keeps a wall-sized flowchart tracking the romantic relationships, breakups, and drama between their penguins. They update it every year. Red hearts mean couples. Blue broken hearts mean it’s over. Purple lines with question marks mean it’s complicated. Yellow means friendship. Green means enemies. One female penguin reportedly ended six relationships in a single year. The comment under her photo, translated from Japanese, described her as “basically demonic.” Another penguin was caught dating someone 17 years older who also turned out to be their great aunt. And penguins who get broken up with sometimes refuse to eat. Apparently the staff say wing-flapping means flirting, grooming each other means it’s official, and if a penguin steals another penguin’s egg… well, it’s exactly what it looks like.

I do this at other people’s houses, salons, the dermatologist, random truck stop bathrooms, etc. It’s necessary.

On this day 35 years ago, over 1,500 people attended the funeral of an 18-year-old boy from Indiana, United States. His pallbearers included Elton John, one of the most famous musicians in the world, and Michael Jackson. The First Lady sat in the front row. The former president wrote a tribute that ran in the national papers. His name was Ryan White. At 13, he contracted HIV through a blood transfusion to treat his haemophilia, a blood disorder that prevents clotting. Doctors gave him six months. When he tried to go back to school, parents and teachers fought to ban him. Restaurants threw away his dishes. Church members refused to shake his hand. He didn’t fight back. He educated. He went on national television and calmly explained how the virus actually worked. He changed more minds about the disease than any campaign or government programme at the time. He lived five years longer than anyone expected. He passed away one month before his high school graduation. Four months after his funeral, the United States Congress passed the Ryan White CARE Act. It became the largest federally funded programme for people living with HIV in the country’s history, and it still operates today, providing care to over 500,000 people every year.
