Episode 2241: @BernsteinGaia on the Threat of AI Companions to Children, by @ajkeen open.substack.com/pub/keenon/p/e… No, social media might no longer be the greatest danger to our children’s well-being. According to the writer and digital activist Gaia Bernstein, the most existential new new threat are AI companions. Bernstein, who is organizing a symposium today on AI companions as the “new frontier of kid’s screen addiction”, warns that this new technology, while marketed as solutions to loneliness, may actually worsen social isolation by providing artificially perfect relationships that make real-world interactions seem more difficult. Bernstein raises concerns about data collection, privacy, and the anthropomorphization of AI that makes children particularly vulnerable. She advocates for regulation, especially protecting children, and notes that while major tech companies like Google and Facebook are cautious about directly entering this space, smaller companies are aggressively developing AI companions designed to hook our kids.

Merry Christmas! We had a big, wonderful family gathering. We didn’t get many pictures, but my Grandson Seiju in Japan asked me for a picture of us with two of my other Grandson’s, Dymitri and Devyn. He was thrilled with this one. Dymitri is wearing a paper crown from the English Christmas Crackers I make everyone pull before we eat. My Constantina’s kids all join in with the fun. Happy Families! xxx

Statement from the New York Yankees: Rickey Henderson was an all-time great player who commanded our attention like few players before or since, transcending our traditional understanding of how elite and thrilling a single player could be in in the batter's box and on the basepaths. When he stepped across the white lines, he was magnetic. Opponents, teammates and fans simply couldn't take their eyes off him. Though he spent just four and a half seasons in pinstripes, Rickey left an indelible mark on our record book, and he entertained us not only with his baseball talent, but with a no-nonsense personality and knack for showmanship that were ahead of its time. We will deeply miss Rickey for everything he brought to the game, and we offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Pamela, daughters Angela, Adrianna, and Alexis, and all his family and friends.
