"The human mandate of the brain is that it likes to think in binary terms, either/or, good/bad, confident or not confident. So, it's easy. But this is not a game that rewards simple thinking.
There's nuance. There's paradox. There’s complexity.
Think of what the Buddha said, I think was the Buddha. So, forgive me if I misquote it, but it doesn't undermine the quality of the idea. He says, “Do every act as if the fate of the universe depended on the outcome.”
In other words, take your work seriously.
And then he says, “While laughing at yourself for thinking anything you do matters at all.” How do you live in both truths, right?
As a golfer, as a quarterback in the NFL, you need psychological freedom. Otherwise, you're going to short arm the ball and get intercepted. Defensive backs know if you're playing scared.
And so, I'm always talking about, you got to be fearless. You can't be reckless, but you have to be fearless. And they are really different things. Fearlessness is the absence of fear. Why? Fear distorts. Self-doubt distorts.
Try to see things as they are objectively. I know real money makers who leave the office at 5:00pm because what they know is, if they stay till 8:00pm, they're going ignore their family.
And if they ignore their family, they are going to be miserable. If they’re miserable, they're not going to make money. And they make it up in other ways. You have to do you, but you have to compensate for your weaknesses.
There are five ways to win in this game. Talent. Work ethic. Process. Differentiated thinking. Hiring, to compensate for your weakness. That’s it."
