BREAKING: Leqaa Kordia was released Monday from the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, where she had been held since her arrest in Newark, New Jersey on March 13, 2025. The Department of Homeland Security had blocked two previous court orders that she be freed, using appeals and employing “automatic stays” to extend her detention. A judge ruled Friday — exactly one year after her detention by DHS during a routine immigration check-in — that Kordia posed “no risk,” reiterating the two previous court orders.
Kordia has been in poor health and was hospitalized for three days in February with a head injury, and her family says they were “stonewalled” by ICE agents who refused to provide them information about her condition or whereabouts after that incident.
The 33-year-old New Jersey woman was targeted by immigration officials after she participated in pro-Palestine demonstrations at Columbia University in 2024. She is the last to be released of several student activists similarly detained by ICE, including Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk. Khalil is still fighting deportation efforts from the Trump administration.
