A lot of people misread Sagan's standard -- some accidentally, some I suspect because they quietly recognize their evidence doesn't clear even a modest bar. So let's be fair to what he actually said. Sagan first used the phrase in 1977 -- and he used it specifically about UFO claims: "There's not a smidgen of evidence to suggest that lights in the sky or the disappearance of ships or planes are due to extraterrestrial intervention... Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." He expanded on what that actually means in his own words: "What counts is not what sounds plausible, not what we would like to believe, not what one or two witnesses claim, but only what is supported by hard evidence, rigorously and skeptically examined." That's the standard. Not exotic evidence. Not some special category of proof. Hard evidence. Rigorous examination. Multiple independent lines of inquiry pointing to the same conclusion. One blurry photo sitting in the low-information zone isn't that. "Unidentified" is not the same as "identified as alien." And "I can't explain it" is not the same sentence as "therefore it must be extraterrestrial." What would actually move the needle? Multiple independent sensor captures. Physical trace evidence. Corroborated testimony from trained observers with no motive to fabricate. Convergence. The bar isn't impossible. It's just higher than one photo nobody can explain.
