As the first US insurer @Chubb announced some initial restrictions on oil and gas insurance today. Chubb will no longer cover oil and gas projects if they are located in protected areas and don’t abate methane emissions at all. A quick 🧵! news.chubb.com/2023-03-22-Chu…

A thread on @HaneeaI piece for @Diplomat_APAC "Gwadar Coal Power Plant: One Step Forward, Two Steps Back" The Gwadar Coal Power Plant has been a topic of much debate in Pakistan, and for good reason. The country's energy needs are increasing, but at what cost? 1/9

“It is time to withdraw from coal and withdrawal from oil and gas to become a new focus” for three reasons: build long-term green competitiveness; attract ESG investment and expand investor base; and respond to the career choices of the younger generation! bit.ly/3Ex5YCY

Electricity use restricted in several parts of China, as high coal prices and a temporary shortage risk brownouts. This isn't a problem more coal would fix. This uncertainty stems from coal addiction and won't go away without a real energy transition. reuters.com/world/china/wh…

ICBC is quietly abandoning coal finance. This should be a signal not only for other Chinese investors but by recipient countries too. As the coal investor base is shrinking, it's a chance to adjust power development strategy from coal to renewables. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Risks of China overseas coal finance noticeably increasing: the vast majority of coal plants that financed by China since 2017 have ended up cancelled or shelved due to power overcapacity, declining economics, and environmental/social concerns. energyandcleanair.org/more-chinese-o…

In the latest draft of PDP 8, Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) proposes no new coal-fired thermal power during 2021-2030, except those already under construction or planned for completion by 2025 or sooner. evwind.es/2021/04/01/vie…

This announcement comes two weeks after S Korea said it will end funding for overseas coal, and China said it would restrict coal projects. It seems that the absence of financial support is the main factor for Indonesia to consider getting rid of coal.

This is the first time that China's top leader commits to strictly control coal power. It's milestone, especially pledges at the #LeadersClimateSummit! But more actions are needed. We hope to see a clearer timeline and cap for coal power capacity soon. scmp.com/news/china/pol…

China will peak coal consumption by 2025. Xi's speech at the #LeadersClimateSummit brough an eventual farewell to coal closer. But more actions are needed. The domestic conditions for faster emission cut are there. It's in China's interest to announce further plans before #COP26

Xi’s #ClimateLeadersSummit speech is the first time he singles out coal. This will open up campaign space. That said, the 2025 coal peak timeline was embedded in earlier commitment to peak emissions before 2030. More actions are certainly needed to phase down coal faster at home.

To achieve carbon neutral by 2060, China must take radical action now. Report shows that China could save up to $1.6 trillion over 20 years, reduce stranded assets and improve its international reputation by switching from coal power to renewables. bbc.com/news/science-e…
