For info, I'm uninstalling Twitter app (not closing account, but likely won't read it). Anyone who cares probably already found me on Mastodon (see profile) but just in case...

The University of Kyoto in Japan allows students to wear anything they want for their Graduation ceremony. This is the way.

🧵For some reason, my mind turns to Cicero's second speech against Catiline. Let me translate it for you... At last, Romans, we have expelled Lucius Catiline, raging with audacity, exhaling criminality, wickedly plotting damage to his country, issuing threats of fire and weapons

@lonita Have you seen rogule.com? It's like Wordle but for NetHack. (Actually, sadly, the game engine is super basic and nothing like NetHack, but still entertaining.)

Is there really "overwhelming" evidence that smartphones and social media are having a "catastrophic" effect on kids' mental health? I don't think so! Here's my long article where I read though the relevant studies and note some serious weaknesses: inews.co.uk/news/technolog…

A river of boiling shit flows through your town. You haven’t seen a tomato for 18 months. MOTD is 3 minutes long and narrated by a parakeet. Your salary is paid directly to British Gas. You solve a riddle to speak to a GP. You feel people come here because they want an easy life

@dougclow Maybe smoke alarms might be in the category of things people usually don't buy themselves (like they come with the house or whatever) which usually leads to terrible quality?

You can do it yourself with a multimeter, I guess, but that's way too much faff to do regularly. I've looked and can't find anything like this. It would add a little bit to the cost of a smoke alarm, but I would very gladly pay a premium for it and I'm sure others would too. 5/5

Why don't they make smoke alarms that tell you the battery is nearing replacement level when you test them? Smoke alarms need to tell you when the battery's getting too low. Even mains-wired ones have battery backup. So they beep when the voltage gets close to exhausted. 1/

@steve_p_uk Related: how can you tell if paying more for a kettle will get a longer-lasting one vs 'more stylish' etc... Ours has lasted ~a decade but my parents had the same model which died after a couple years so I guess we're just lucky (also we don't drink as much tea as my mum)

We seem to get through kettles like Spinal Tap got through drummers. Another one has packed up today. What’s the average lifespan of a kettle?

This is my 6th year at @FactCheck and every winter England’s NHS has been in crisis. So when I started looking at the latest stats I was expecting to do a story about history repeating itself. But it’s not repeating. 2022 was *so* much worse. I can prove it in one graph.🧵

@dougclow @Tesco @coopuk Got a dozen eggs from Tesco in our online shop yesterday (the exact kind we ordered, not substitution) so presumably patchy/variable...

The egg shortage seems to be really biting locally. Wartime eggless recipes it is!
