One thing I really like about Australia compared to Scandinavia, is how much you have a little chat with random people in like stores or just walking around. Very high openness public spaces. Maybe it's just because I'm sending out happier vibes now and I'm not exerting fear and anxiety pheromones, I guess, but even accounting for that there is a notable difference. Denmark is very closed and informal, while Aus is very open and informal. It's a very big difference but it's a nuance that's hard to pin down

Gout Gout was at Ipswich Grammar School to play soccer. He had never trained as a sprinter. He was twelve years old, wearing sand shoes, and somebody told him to line up for a race at the school carnival. The kid next to him was wearing spikes. He had won nationals. Gout left him in the dust. His classmate Tyson Walker was in the race too. "Everyone there stopped and watched," Walker recalled. "We had GPS athletics the next week and he broke every record and just didn't stop. He's just kept going faster." A coach named Di Sheppard saw him run that day. She told him he could be an Olympic medalist. He later said it was the first time anyone had ever told him anything like that. He was twelve. He joined her squad and started training twice a week. Here is where the story gets strange. At 14 he ran 10.57 in the 100m, the fastest ever by an Australian under 16. At 15 he broke the national U18 200m record. At 16 he clocked 10.04 in a heat, then 10.17 legal in the final, then woke up the next morning and ran 20.04 in the 200m, breaking Peter Norman's Australian record from the 1968 Olympics. That record had stood for 56 years. Usain Bolt saw the footage, posted a photo, and wrote "He looks like young me." The Bolt comparison is worth sitting with. Bolt didn't race 100 meters professionally until he was 21. His first professional 100m was 10.03. Gout Gout ran 10.00 flat at 18. And his coach still only puts him in the gym two days a week. She's managing the fact that his body is still growing. The power phase of his development hasn't started. He is running these times on stride length and raw top-end speed alone. His parents are Dinka, from South Sudan. They fled to Egypt, then to Australia, two years before he was born. Third of seven children. The family name was misspelled during transliteration from Arabic. It was supposed to be Guot. His father has been trying to change it back because "gout" is a disease name. The kid kept running. Brisbane 2032. Home Olympics. He'll be 24, the same age Bolt was when he set the 100m world record in Berlin. Adidas already signed him through that year. The fastest man in Australian history started in sand shoes at a school carnival. Nobody told him to stop.
Qadi@Bigqadi

Absolutely outrageous from Gout Gout. 10.04 at the age of 16. Speechless.

Apart from literally causing skin cancer, derms know prolonged sun exposure accounts for like 80% of extrinsic ageing. But the anti-science crowd would rather moisturise with beef tallow and fry themselves in the sun than listen to professionals.

scenes from a dermatologist conference in hawaii imagine thinking the sun, the source of all life on earth, that plants turn to and animals seek out, that makes you feel & look better every time you spend time in it... this is insanity

@ranmasaotome96 One of my exes shaved his huskies during summer and spring and they weren’t purely outside dogs so I kinda know how to treat them thanks to him. His huskies also were pretty healthy, with all of them living for 10+ years, longest living for 17 whole years 🙃

i’m sorry but there’s something weird about looking at THIS woman and saying that she’s “presenting herself like a child”… she is an adult woman, dressed like an adult woman, speaking about her life as an adult woman!
Shallon@forevershallon

@edenbound_ She's a woman of 34 who, for reasons known only to herself, presents herself like a child. A close female friend should take her aside and advise her to dress for her professional position to be taken seriously. Sure, people will comment. That's not ‘breaking’ anyone’s brains!

Australia’s support of Trump and Netanyahu’s illegal attack is disgraceful. We cannot bomb our way to peace. The Albanese Labor government must immediately rule out any Australian support for this escalation: no resources and no intelligence.
Anthony Albanese@AlboMP

Australia stands with the brave people of Iran in their struggle against oppression. For decades, the Iranian regime has been a destabilising force, through its ballistic missile and nuclear programs, support for armed proxies, and brutal acts of violence and intimidation. Iran directed at least two attacks on Australian soil in 2024. These appalling acts targeting Australia’s Jewish community were intended to create fear, divide our society and challenge our sovereignty. In response, Australia took the unprecedented steps of expelling Iran’s Ambassador, suspending operations at our embassy in Tehran, and listing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a state sponsor of terrorism. Our Government has sanctioned more than 200 Iranian-linked individuals, including more than 100 linked to the IRGC. With international partners, including the United States and the G7, we have called for the Iranian regime to uphold the human rights and fundamental freedoms of Iran’s citizens. These calls have gone unheeded. Instead, the regime has instigated a brutal crackdown on its own people leaving thousands of Iranian civilians dead. A regime that relies on the repression and murder of its own people to retain power is without legitimacy. It has long been recognised that Iran’s nuclear program is a threat to global peace and security. The international community has been clear that the Iranian regime can never beallowed to develop a nuclear weapon. The United Nations Security Council has reimposed sanctions on Iran for failing to comply with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action and the International Atomic Energy Agency Board has formally declared Iran in non-compliance with its non-proliferation safeguards obligations. We support the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and to prevent Iran continuing to threaten international peace and security. Australian officials are closely monitoring this evolving situation. We continue to advise Australians do not travel to Iran and leave Iran as soon as possible, if it is safe to do so. Our ability to provide consular assistance in Iran is extremely limited. Given our concerns around security in the region, we have also upgraded Australia’s travel advice for Israel and Lebanon to Do Not Travel. Australians should leave now if it is safe to do so. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has activated its Crisis Centre to provide consular support to Australians in the region. Australians requiring urgent consular assistance can contact the Consular Emergency Centre 24/7 on 1300 555 135 in Australia or +61 2 6261 3305 from outside Australia.
