PolkaVM != Vitalik’s proposed pure risc-v VM Ethereum considers replacing the evm w/ a native risc-v runtime. Polkadot started exploring alternatives to wasm for sc & came up with sth in 2023: a “risc-v based” VM called PolkaVM (PVM). Same thing? Yes & No. Think I’ve shitposted enough, time to walk you thru the behind the scenes. [If you’ve never heard of risc-v, stop here. Go vibe w/ Binji’s thread instead: x.com/binji_x/status…] PolkaVM isn’t a raw risc-v: it’s constrained by design tldr: it ingest risc-v elf binaries & translate them into a safe, lean and efficient custom bytecode. So: > not running risc-v as is > memory & jump instructions are virtualized and controlled > programs can’t access or jump around arbitrarily Why so? • better determinism (more predictable) • easier metering • to have a safe execution • simpler proving Vitalik wants native risc-v runtime (for now, anyway) „Replace evm w/ risc-v. Keep semantics (sload, call, etc) as syscalls. Let devs compile to risc-v. Stay backward compat.” So: > cut zk proving cost > simplify VM spec > enable hardware-acceleration (fpga/asic etc) Means: • dealing w/ general purpose instruction sets on-chain • exposing low-lvl control flow & memory access • needing mmu-like safety features inside the VM • higher complexity in gas metering zk proving efficiency is part of the story, not the whole thing Vitalik cites 50-100x proving gains in some areas (block exec, loop unrolling, etc) But the pushback is: • precompiles don’t go away. You still need them for keccak, ec ops, sigs • u256 math on risc-v is not efficient • llvm isn’t great at auto-vectorizing realworld code • proving risc-v execution != proving sc semantics. Still need to prove syscalls, memory reads/writes, storage mutations tldr: proving simple instructions is cheap. Proving sc behavior is still hard. And so alternative suggestions have already popped out: • custom ISA (like TinyRAM) • eof-based evm • zk friendly wasm subsets • cairo, stylus, zkMIPS, etc What PolkaVM achieves is kind of different and probably good food for thought for Ethereum Instead of trying to make pure risc-v run on-chain, it keeps risc-v devX, but: • pushes all complexity into off-chain tooling • translates to bytecode designed only for on-chain exec • makes recompilation illegaly fast (faster than hashing) • keeps runtime lean af • able to pause & resume execution Aka: „not exposing the whole architecture. Virtualize address space. Disallow arbitrary jumps. Remove runtime memory access. So it’s not general purpose on-chain by design (!)” — man behind PolkaVM So, PolkaVM can run: • standard programs compiled w/ existing toolchains • even ported games like Quake • Rust, C, C++ -> no custom DSLs required Ethereum might support those too eventually but Solidity seems to gonna be still default. Running those programs natively on risc-v on-chain -> rethinking a lot of safety & gas constraints. Meta-convo: what’s a VM supposed to be? „To get the zk & perf gains, you want compiled contracts to run like executables, not interpreted bytecode. But for that, need memory isolation, syscall guards, probably a minimal mmu.” Aka: turning Ethereum into sth like a microkernel OS. Not just a chain that interprets opcodes. PolkaVM avoids that whole mess by treating execution like a streamlined runtime, not a sandboxed OS. Closure Both want better sc VMs. PolkaVM gets there by simplifying. Ethereum seems to wanting to go deeper into CPU territory, become a true verifiable CPU, prove every cycle. Polkadot already operates at that layer, just without exposing raw CPU semantics. JAM abstracts the CPU, treat execution as an isolated task per core, lets each VM define how code is compiled & constrained. (doesn’t care whether the logic comes from wasm, PolkaVM or sth else) Still kinda similar ends. Kinda different paths. But once again, these two ecosystems somehow align whether you love or hate one another.

@usdcpatron has a layerzero testnet check it out, I think it will be an efficiency improvement. Less worrying about having the correct token.

@jaredgrey I disagree and its not just innovation, its also accessibility and security. Financial literacy for some. Be the change you want to see!

Maybe an unpopular opinion but I don't see much innovation in DeFi concerning real world utility. Most of it focuses on circular liquidity "utility" & little real world application. Exchanges & lending products achieved the greatest product market fit but what else?

@API3DAO Can we snapshot vote? Eth gas fees may be a barrier to some who want to participate in governance, and staking should already reduce spam. Also how will API3 remain free? Please just a TLDR, I will do my best to read the white paper when I have more time.

@nearnauts how about we make the Nauts cross-chain compatible so we can take them wherever the team develops next? It'd make the originals more valuable and we wouldn't have to keep buying more, interoperable and interconnected would be something to brag about!

@TeamKujira how about some user protection? It'd be great to have the platform insured for traders and especially lp's. You all are creative! How about a small fee increase to offset platform wide insurance? At least optional insurance we can buy?

@notionaldao For example, disqualifying small wallets from airdrops. How does only rewarding large stakers benefit a project? I think airdrops should/could be tiered by staking amounts and have a max cap per wallet. So everyone gets a taste and things are more decentralized.

Hey everyone, this is just a reminder that if you hold Cosmos governance tokens, you can override your validator. Please, feel free and encouraged to do so, even if you delegate to us.

@notionaldao @The_BendyOne @imperator_co These low engagement account are all over ATOM 2.0, but at the end of the day the only thing making this NWV scam work is the DokiaCapital vote. The community as a whole is clearly in favor of ATOM 2.0, this is a big loss for effective Cosmos governance

@notionaldao What's the NWV vote? Also some people can't dedicate as much time to governance and doing on-chain transactions as others. I think some consideration should be given to the fact that not everyone has extra time and funds to throw around at financial experiments. No disrespect.
