@mattbaran I agree with the point as you've posed it—consider it a dialectic or perhaps a paradox. Just because it's "too far" by some scale doesn't negate its beauty, but its beauty cannot overcome its questionable indulgence. Maybe that architecture is now prohibited.

I think the overall effect is problematic when there is no diversity. I personally have the same issue with neighborhoods that require repetitive traditional ‘styles’ but for me there’s room for anything. It keeps life interesting. I’d also say that even though the time for this type of work has passed, and formal, sculptural forms have fallen out of favor, I still appreciate the effort to strive for something extraordinary. Going too far might have just been a consequence of pushing hard on the boundaries. Personally I find much of the work very seductive and “beautiful” (whatever that might mean) but I’m also aware this is completely subjective.

I walked this collection of new and old Eric Owen Moss designed projects in Culver City yesterday. I was with a developer that works for the company that just became part owner of the entire group of properties. His personal feeling was, this is architecture for architects. Not for other people. They also leak a lot 🧐 I can understand his position. The challenge is finding a space that is both innovative and broadly acceptable (and water tight). It’s a constant negotiation, balancing creativity with real-world constraints.

great quote today: "There’s no reason to fear falling off a platform that’s only a few inches above the ground." @TimBenzPGH

@stevemouzon Better said, but the point is well taken as refined is style agnostic.

@leecalisti Lee, I should have said "highly refined." That goes beyond the Western classical tradition to the most refined work on all non-frozen continents. Never been to Antarctica, but suspect buildings there are really utilitarian.

A row of townhouses of a single design is the hardest to accomplish and is therefore the rarest type. The only way I know to pull it off successfully is with high classical design beautiful enough to compensate for the repetitiveness. This takes years of training.

@wjmarchitect Yes, it was. We had a few good laughs, but meeting so many talented architects in person was an honor.

@stevemouzon Sometimes they may appear as an added feature on a house. However, I could see them as spatial dividers or definers to reconcile the space from the sidewalk to the front of the house, and to the entrance door. I agree with your description on how they should operate.

Porches & fences are attacked as sentimental pastiche, but they're actually finely honed social engagement devices. Someone sitting on the porch is within easy conversation distance of someone walking by, but feels protected by the fence & rail. So people get to know each other.

@jclreads I didn't need to see the DJT towel; how insulting to...everyone else. When players stomp on the towel, it goes beyond our 'right' to free speech to free 'contempt.' We need none of that in the US or with the Stillers n'at.
