It's been fun working on this video, in part, because I'm fascinated with the fediverse and new, less-commercial directions for social media. I feel like we're getting back to our roots in social media. Our first videos care from passion for blogs, wikis, rss, etc. They are about ideas and not companies. Once companies started running the show, it wasn't as exciting anymore. That's why Mastodon is different for me.

Over at @CommonCraft we've been working on a video that explains #Mastodon using a pop culture analogy. The poster image has some clues:

@leelefever Your video explaining RSS like a decade ago helped me teach tens of people to learn that technology back then. Something like that today to explain the idiosyncrasies of Mastodon would be very good. Specially the confusion about different instances and censorship resistance.

🧵 There was a time in 2007 when all I wanted to talk about was social media. We were making @CommonCraft videos and Web 2.0 was the thing. I haven’t felt that way for a long time. Recently that feeling has returned and driven by decentralization, Mastodon, and the Fediverse.

Right now, I’m bullish on Mastodon and don’t mind evangelizing a bit because it’s defiantly non-commercial. I feel like my promotion is more authentic because I’m not implicitly helping a company’s business model or bottom line. I find that SO refreshing.
