@Edmund_B_W It’s beyond belief that Ruth’s family, friends and supporters are still having to fight for what’s right for schools and the education system as a whole.

@legkick1 I’m sorry this still hasn’t been resolved, Scottie. And that Julia is still having to devote so much of her life to pressing Ofsted to act on what the coroner called for in 2023, what the inquiry concluded in 2024, and what the Gilbert and McBrearty reports reinforced in 2024–25.

@Edmund_B_W I’ve felt really uneasy today.Taken a couple of walks & couldn’t work out where it was coming from, then I realised the date. 3 years ago today I sat in my car at the end of a very difficult school and personal term/year/18 months, not knowing how I would carry on.

@FixingEducation I’ve been teaching since 1994. I wouldn’t let my kids become teachers. It’s sad.

@dave_mcpartlin I watched something on Facebook from a professor who has looked at the correlation between good OFSTEDs and FSMs stating that the higher the FSM the more likely a Requires attention 🤯 this isn’t because they are not as good as the others, it’s because it’s so much harder.

"Requires Attention." Schools with high FSM are far more likely to sit under that label in the new Ofsted framework, especially the Achievement section. Daft thing is, it already has our attention. It always will. Poverty requires attention. Hunger requires attention. Trauma requires attention. A judgement that ignores all of that - and then penalises the people giving their lives to the cause? That requires attention too.

@cerysturner7 What an arse, I have never worked with school leaders who work in disadvantaged areas who ‘succumb to…low expectations’ but they absolutely know the context and work tirelessly to achieve their best potential. The fact that he believes that shows his pure lack of understanding.

It comes after Sir Martyn Oliver told union members that he will “never succumb to the quiet curse of low expectations”. + He was v clear that Ofsted will not prioritise “context over outcomes” for disadvantaged pupils: tes.com/magazine/news/…

I analysed almost 500 inspections to see if schools with disadvantaged intakes are performing worse on pupil outcomes. The findings show that it's disproportionate. Heads say it's demoralising as they urge Ofsted not to confuse achievement & attainment. tes.com/magazine/news/…

@SwailesRuth In the job I do now, I hear this so much. As a HT I wouldn’t dream of telling a parent this - it makes me so sad with the education system. And the ones that are being penalised more are the most vulnerable and those trying everything to give them those opportunities.

they work their data is never going to look as good as the schools who tell parents, " we can't meet your child's needs". How does this improve the system for all? Where's the incentive to take on a school that needs to improve? The system is broken.

Recently I've been speaking to lots of leaders who have taken on schools that need to improve, and who have moved mountains in a short period of time, but who are resigned to the fact that no matter how much they do, their next inspection report will have "orange dots" no matter

@Edmund_B_W @Nicola123452 On top of sorting this being the right thing to do why is this also not at the forefront of Martyn’s mind - oh possibly because they don’t seem to be accountable for their actions 😢🤦🏼‍♀️

@Edmund_B_W @Nicola123452 When looking at health and safety in schools there is possibly and probable. If the worse was to happens due to OFSTED then this surely will be probable, in a school situation if nothing had been done to mitigate this the HT can be charged with neglect.

I’ve been away for a bit. We haven’t been having the best time, to be honest. I’ve noticed a few things happening with Ofsted and their supporters recently, and I’ve written about it. Ofsted, of course, are driving on regardless. difficultlessons.wordpress.com/2026/03/17/dri…

Three years today a fantastic headteacher took her own life as a consequence of an Ofsted inspection. The inquest led to the coroner issuing a Regulation 28 report, identifying systemic weaknesses in Ofsted’s processes that, left unchecked, present a danger of further death…

Today we remember a hardworking, well respected head teacher, Ruth Perry, who is very much missed. Ofsted’s new framework does not address the harm inherent in a grades-based schools accountability system, and it does not address significant risks to staff wellbeing and safety. We call for a new system that is supportive, effective and fair – one that will support school leaders, not punish them.

Big thanks to Halton Head's for asking me to facilitate a session on leadership today. No magic ingredients in schools (esp. with tight budgets) but these ones help us support staff & dream big. Always a massive privilege to represent @ITLWorldwide - and what a stunning location!

@RogersHistory I gave my Y6 prefects a role in the interviewing for an AHT. They came with me to observe their lessons. They were really good - in one of the lessons the behaviour wasn’t great. The children pick up on that and said they would struggle in our setting. I felt it was invaluable
