Last year @BillyBloodworm looked at reedbeds around the country to assess their prospects for bitterns. This month read all about in @britishbirds . It’s one of our best species recovery stories but what about their future? @NaturalEngland @Natures_Voice
Graham White@BillyBloodworm

So, my final trip to visit 23+ of the most important reedbed sites to see how they are planning future management for key species, notably Bitterns. A project funded by @NaturalEngland. Lakenheath Fen, created with Bitterns in mind, now supports a diversity of wetland species….

Recent census in partnership with RSPB reveals brilliant news for Lundy's cliff-nesting seabirds. Population expansion continues despite worrying declines reported nationally. 📷 Guillemot colony © Andrew Cleave Full article 👇 lundybirdobs.org.uk/index.php/gene…

20 year anniversary of the completion of the rat eradication project on Lundy. Then there was a handful of puffin remaining and extinction from ‘Puffin Island’ loomed. Last week we counted 700 puffin in Jennys Cove alone! Amazing recovery. Other auks and kittiwakes increasing too

So today we discussed mitigation - key point is vigilance at start of breeding season and removing dead birds asap. And we come back to seabirds colonies needing improved management and the need to create new safe nesting areas to build resilience.

@leighlock1 Hi Leigh, it would be good to see any outcomes from this workshop if minutes/report can be shared at a later date. Sounds like an interesting workshop. Thanks!

East coast of England particularly impacted - notably Coquet Farnes and Scolt. Estimated that AI has reduced England pops of sandwich tern by 10% - and if roseate and common terns by 39% and 10% respectively. We have to be prepared for next years breeding season .

Arrived at Lands End with @naturalengland colleagues & @_AndyClements for an event celebrating the return of the Chough to Cornwall. What do we see? Not only Chough, but a shoal of Bluefin Tuna hunting with Gannets close by the rocky shore. Two great beacons of hope on one trip!
