I have a visceral contempt and loathing for people who speak badly about my country. Especially when it's South Africans who've left South Africa and made it their business to trash South Africa. This is not a new phenomenon. It was particularly acute in the early 2000s when the well-documented and colloquially named “brain drain” occurred. Curiously, many who had left the country and were trashing it later returned to South Africa and were welcomed into our society unimpeded. Some are reading this post right now. South Africans of all races (myself included) live and work worldwide. But we also know that we don't need to hate our country or bash our country of birth to contribute to any other country legitimately. Bashing South Africa doesn't harm those in power. It worsens the lives of ordinary people trying to survive and provide for their families. It destroys jobs, hurts businesses and robs our kids of a better life. This behaviour is symptomatic of an over-amplified sense of self-importance. Those who do this believe their experience is the only true reality & story for all South Africans. Our country is not perfect, but it is still our country. The international community should not weaponise our struggles and internal contestations. Those who seek to use those contestations to threaten our country's sovereignty should face the full, non-racial, unified condemnation of ALL South Africans. Lastly, and not to put a finer point on it, people died for you and me to have the right to be citizens in this country—full citizens without limitations on our rights. If we are unhappy, we can express that unhappiness by voting for change. If our votes are insufficient, we should convince our fellow citizens and lobby them to support our cause. However, these should be done within the confines of democratic processes. If we remain disappointed, we can challenge the government or even our political opponents in the courts. That's how a functioning democracy works. That's how our democracy works. However, South Africa's future is for South Africans to determine—and for South Africans alone. We must stand united and call out those who are callous enough to misrepresent our nation, exploit our differences, or seek to divide us.
