I am happy to share that I’ve been awarded tenure here at Columbia University. Alhamdulillah. I thank my wife, parents, mentors, colleagues, friends, & family. I thank my lab members, present and past, for entrusting their careers in my hands and making this a thrilling journey.

💥Emotions are central to the human experience 😠😳😃☺️😔😕😮🙂 Our Human Neural Circuitry team just took a step towards understanding how they arise–using brain-wide electrical ⚡recordings in humans and mice @ScienceMagazine Read on for more… 1/n

Congratulations to our Human Neural Circuitry team; bit.ly/4dEyX7Z publishes today in Science! This was the hardest challenge of my career, but one of the most rewarding, after years of rebuilding– & for myself, expanding my inpatient neuropsychiatry work to the service of basic discovery: med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/… I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the amazing lead authors Isaac Kauvar @ikauvar, Ethan Richman, and Tony Liu @liutony66, and with equally brilliant faculty colleagues in our HNC program: Carolyn Rodriguez @CRodriguezMDPhD, Paul Nuyujukian, and Vivek Buch @VivekBuchMD, along with many other key collaborators spanning hospital and laboratory. x.com/KarlDeisseroth…

🚨new paper🚨 Thirst and hunger are our most primitive and vital drives. But what exactly are they in the brain? How do they enforce behavior? In our new Annual Review, we tackle this topic and discuss the science that links peripheral physiology to motivation and action. 🔗⬇️

@NIH Are you joking? Heaps of necessary costs to conduct research are not allowed in the direct costs; this money is not arbitrary administrative costs. It's a necessary component of the research enterprise.

@edcclayton @stappan1 My first SfN was with you and the PiN summer students! I remember not having a credit card and having to reach out for incidentals. Bummer I will miss you at this year's meeting

Just canceled my trip to SFN in Chicago and am weirdly devastated to not be attending. I've been every year (minus COVID) since 1996. Still remember driving to DC with @stappan1 for my very first meeting and being completely overwhelmed by both DC and the meeting itself.

This!!! First thing I did when I started my independent position was demand a lab credit card so that me and my trainees wouldn't have to give our institution zero interest loans just to do our work!!

I often talk about how important I think it is to end Reimbursement culture and it’s obvious that some people don’t understand how transformative that could be in graduate education and retention of UR individuals. So, let’s talk: (1/n)

UPDATE: After I defend in Sep, I’ll be starting a postdoc with Dr. Bill Robinson’s autoimmune disease lab at Stanford University. I’m VERY excited to get the chance to study viral and bacterial triggers of chronic autoimmune diseases.🦠

The next gen of HNC is already on the way! Left to right: @SamVesuna (MD PhD psychiatry resident), @ikauvar (PhD neuroengineer), @chibyanada (program manager extraordinaire), & @liutony66 (bioengineering PhD student). New/improved in all ways, with better album cover picture too.
