Couldn’t agree more, this is the part most people miss. Yeah, it was messy… but it had to be messy. Every new tech cycle goes through that phase where incentives get abused before they get refined. Web3 gaming just speedran it. What we’re seeing now feels different though, teams are finally building games first, crypto second. No more forcing tokens into broken loops, no more designing around yield instead of fun. The moment a game proves it can retain players without rewards… that’s when everything flips. Not gradually but overnight. And when that happens, the same people calling Web3 gaming “dead” are gonna be the first ones chasing it again 🚀

Hard to argue with most of that. The incentives were just off from the start, and once fun takes a backseat, everything else eventually collapses with it. The only thing I’d add is this was probably a necessary phase. It showed exactly what doesn’t work, and forced teams to rethink how they build. The next wave isn’t about fixing tokenomics, it’s about making games people actually want to play, then layering everything else in after. When that finally clicks, the whole narrative flips overnight.

HOT TAKE: Web3 gaming didn’t fail, it was misaligned from day one. “Play-to-earn” promised income but turned players into liquidity Grinding replaced fun, and bots replaced real users Token charts mattered more than gameplay loops Early users were treated as exit liquidity, not community Retention was bought, not built When rewards stopped, so did the players Teams chased narratives instead of making good games Web2 gamers were ignored, yet expected to onboard anyway Speculators dominated ecosystems meant for players Hype cycles replaced long-term vision Now we’re left with empty worlds, recycled ideas, and the same capital chasing the next “trend.” The real shift won’t come from better tokenomics. It will come when someone builds a game people would play even without crypto. Good luck gamers!
