@luhugerth "clip" or "clamp", perhaps? For fastening I would search for e.g. "hose clip", "saddle clamp", "velcro strap".

@3rdreviewer We thought it was a key concept for the field too. We put feelers out, but most peers considered it common knowledge that may have just lacked explicit consideration. Great memories of my first published work, with @dposada_ and @leomrtns Thanks for the kind words, @3rdreviewer

@BioMickWatson "A zebra crossing with a central island is two separate crossings (see Rule 20)" highwaycodeuk.co.uk/rules-for-pede… Thus most of those are not zebra crossings: no belisha beacons, no zigzag markings. Terrible, half-baked design, yes. Cyclists should do better, yes. "Supposed to stop", no.

@lemire The original study does not allow for the certainty expressed by the columnist. From cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.10…, the key message: "We are uncertain whether wearing masks or N95/P2 respirators helps to slow the spread of respiratory viruses based on the studies we assessed."

New York Times: “There is just no evidence that masks make any difference, Full stop.” What about N-95 masks, as opposed to lower-quality surgical or cloth masks? “Makes no difference — none of it” nytimes.com/2023/02/21/opi…

@JohnDCook @lemire Most of the studies included in this meta-analysis _are_ from before 2019, see #CD006207-sec-0015" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.10… As mentioned in the thread and by the authors themselves, mask intervention for influenza didn't work b/c "adherence with interventions was low in many studies".

@lemire Dozens of studies before 2019 had shown masks to be ineffective. Experts knew, or should have known, that they wouldn’t work.

@daniela_witten Did you just described UK's narrative CV? jokes aside. Although not an explicit core competency, from recomendation letters to diversity and teaching phylosophy statements, it's hard to get the foot on the door without some tearjerker docs.

I don’t expect ChatGPT to change academia because writing long-winded but eloquent text that has a non-zero probability of being hot garbage is not a core academic competency.

@agapow int64 is from numpy, while Int64 is an extension type from Pandas. The main difference is that Int64 is a nullable integer pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/de…. With int64 for instance, presence of an NaN forces the type to become float; with Int64 you can have NaNs

A head-scratcher - in #Python #Pandas the types "int64" and "Int64" are different? Actually different or just cosmetically different (i.e. the name)? Was being paranoid with some code, checking types, and 2 dataframes converted slightly differently & the dtypes don't match

@RomainStuder By doing that, you don't need to worry much about the main theme of the server (you can follow ppl across servers). To see a full list of servers by category and moderation: instances.social It's also suggested to avoid very big servers due to possible bandwith issues

fediscience.org and scholar.social are currently not accepting new members. Alternatives? Sure, it "doesn't matter which server", but then every server has a weirdly specific target audience, e.g., "programming language theorists and mathematicians"

@netflix really has to rethink its support of conspirational, pseudoscientific "documentaries". Most paying customers will not want to sponsor it, once they realise it. Alternatives like Amazon Prime or Dysney are a much better investment in our future.
Flint Dibble 🍖🏺@FlintDibble

In his new Netflix “documentary” #AncientApocalypse, @Graham__Hancock has declared war on archaeologists His rhetoric sows distrust in experts, and #Atlantis conspiracy theories promote white supremacy Buckle up, it’s time for an #ARCHAEOLOGY THREAD 🧵 /1
